Subject: Late to the game as usual (Michael Malone)

I finally picked up Red Clay, Blue Caddy. I have only read the first story and half of the second (I get alot of reading done in the summer by the pool and at the beach, but hardly crack a book all winter-long), and so far I am impressed. I like the way he writes. I am SO very hopeful for the women characters on the show now.

[> [> Great Book! I highly recommend it to everyone! Some funny quotes inside: -- ladyday, 00:21:25 01/02/03 Thu

From "Patty":

"Southern men are often drunk and hauling at people, but they don't cry in public unless their mothers have died or their alma mater's lost a bowl game."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Here's a few samples from the chapter/story titled "Flonnie":

At ten o'clock when the Lord was expecting to hear from her, Flonnie said her prayers on her knees, one hand clinched tightly around the back of a grandchild's neck to insure that we did the same. "Show the Lord some respect. He won't truck with a wiggler. A whiner neither." Then she sang us lullabies that scared us to death.
"Way down yonder, in the meadow, Lies a poor little baby, Gnats and flies picking out his eyes. Poor little thing is crying Mammy."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Whenever Flonnie called us "honey" or "honeylamb", we knew we were going to be sent on an errand, for the rest of the time she called us "child" or "young 'un" or assigned us an arbitrary name, usually a cousin's. "I'm not Jimmy, I'm Phillip."
"It's no never mind to me what you callin' yourself. Carry that dog out this kitchen 'fore I toss it in my stove and fry it quicker'n you can say Jack Robinson."

>I haven't been big on books since that phase I went through few years back when I thought who ever came up with Harliquen books {sp} should get the Noble Peace Prize for Literature... Yeah that lasted about six whole weeks...

Red Clay Blue Caddy so far has been a fun and interesting read, The women have all been smart, funny and tough as hell. LD I have to agree with you, anyone who can write women like this can only bring good things {god I hope} to the feeble, dumb, no nothings that call themselves the female residents of Llanview!

So Far my favorite quote has to belong to Chamaine, when she was rescued by the police upon her overdose at the Marriott after pumping two slugs into Kyle Sr. She goes

"So the saved my life and went for the death penlty"

She earned her respect!

[> [> You're welcome blainca, now have you gotten to "Time's Witness" yet? clickie -- ladyday, 00:02:46 01/20/03 Mon

I've just finished it and am ready to discuss! A very well written and moving (and fast moving) mystery/crime drama/character study.

Okay the lawyer named Nora in this book is (I think) the prototype for our own Nora Hannen Gannon Buchanan, except the Nora in "Time's Witness" is Italian, not Jewish (same thing, believe me). And the main character Police Chief Cuddy Magnum is SO Bo Buchanan before JFP had him beat up RJ and had the force lie to protect him (Bo). Now I'm off to read the other Cuddy and Justin novel, "First Lady" (Justin is Cuddy's lieutenant and right hand man).

But let me leave you with this small quote from "Time's Witness"....I thought it was funny. The D.A. is cross examining a prostitute on the stand and trying to cast aspersions. She says, "I don't call you a liar just 'cause you're a lawyer. Don't call me one, just 'cause I'm a hooker".

[> [> [> Just to clarify things......Time's Witness, Uncivil Seasons, and First Lady are all Cuddy & Justin novels (Hillston Police who were in "Patty" in Red Clay, Blue Caddy). And FYI blainca...your granny Flonnie from Red Clay, Blue Caddy is also a character in "Handling Sin". -- ladyday, 23:37:36 01/20/03 Mon

[> [> LOL! Get whichever ones ya want or can find. I am reading "First Lady" now, already read "Time's Witness". These are both Justin & Cuddy novels by Michael Malone. But hey, if you find something else in the bookstore, just let me know and I'll find it and read it. Now go take a nap (an whatchoo doing up so late to be sleep deprived, hmmmmmm?) -- ladyday, 22:01:32 01/27/03 Mon
