In reply to: Drake 's message, "Is this The United States of America?" on 22:39:37 03/01/03 Sat

It both saddens and pleases me to read the above quoted document.

For the past 2 years, I have been living in Germany – a member State of The European Union. My experiences here have opened my mind immeasurable to the global community, and the impact and impressions America leaves on the world, or at least the EU.

I am saddened because I find myself strongly agreeing with Mr. Kiesling. However, it reassures me to know that at least some Americans are being exposed to – and exploring the possibility of – their responsibility in the current world political climate.

What I have found living here is that many Europeans passionately want The United States to continue to represent the values of freedom and human rights, that for so many years – and with so much hope – it had come to symbolize. They are deeply disappointed by the decay of those principles and angry at our foolish abandonment of what were our core values. They wish to believe that the problem lies in the current administration and not the American people. They want to continue to believe that the American people are basically a good, decent and kind people. Their own experiences have taught them how giving the American spirit is, as their countries – the very cities they live in – thrive partially based on American generosity.

It is the support towards the President and his administration, shown in the polls, that horrifies them. They are confused as to how these same people could stand behind a man who espouses hate and ignorance; all with a ‘Christian’ façade.

Over these past two years, I have written to my friends and families about what I have seen here. They too have sent me news from America. Like my friends here in Europe, I want to believe that America isn’t best represented by the polls. I too want to believe that America is greater than the hate and fear that we feel after September 11.

Soon, I will be returning to The States. I want to believe – to hold onto my faith – that America is still great and capable in leading the world towards freedom and human dignity.

Thank you Drake for sharing the above message. It means a lot for me to read such words.
