Hello All:
I am cultured, educated and possessed of many skills. Why, you may be wondering, would I ever go see a film like "JackAss: The Movie"?
First, a group of friends kidnapped me to drag me away from programming for a while. Very thoughtful of them. Second, I turned most of them into “JackAss” fans against their better judgments and collective will. Third... well this review tells the third reason.
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, to recommend this as a film. The sequences are little more than taped together, poorly shot video montages with no common thread or logic (except for one fact: see next paragraph). There is no acting in this film. There is no direction or directing in the movie (except for one fact aspect: see next paragraph). "JackAss" seems arbitrary and a rudimentary study in what not to do when making a real-life film. With all that said, I highly endorse this film under a couple of serious caveats.
This movie is about a group of guys hurting each other and themselves for their (and our) amusement. They know full well what they are getting into, and this is why this movie is not horrific or completely sophomoric (although it is close regarding the latter). Johnny K. and the Gang make no pretense or fake that they were duped into performing these stunts or acts of reckless personal endangerment. They are violent toward one another, merciless to the extreme, encourage stupidity to dangerous levels, and seem to have a great time doing it. HOWEVER, their sense of friendship comes through. Even though they laugh like loons at one another's self-imposed plights and sometimes bloody reward, they do not act out of crass, malignant intent. How can they? They readily accept these dares, but even so the intent (while they do aim to damage one another) is to amuse themselves and us for a brief period. Their laughter, and mine through at least 75% of the film, is heartfelt and real.
Once again, there is nothing to really recommend this film... unless you enjoy grotesque, obscene and vulgar humor and stunts. This film has that in spades! "JackAss: The Movie" does get around to answering one age-old question I have had for years: What is the end result of snorting wassabi?
Rating: 3 out of 4 Concussions.
Rated "R" for very good reasons. 80-minute running time. Starring the cast of the "JackAss" television series from MTV (no longer in production). NOT RECOMMENDED FOR TEENAGERS OR ANYONE ELSE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A FIRM GRIP ON REALITY.
Respectfully Reviewed,
Drake
