i found my way over from Deweys site with the Brian & Pete stories and discovered your offshoot of that story. to sat the least, the B & P series hit me very hard from all angles, however, FHO may have hit me harder. i've been through it a couple times and it still hits me as hard as the first time.

my question is, is the story going to continue from ch58, or is it truly the end?

i hope not. these stories have helped me identify some of my demons, though i still have to deal with them.

when i read these, it makes me feel a part of them, sharing what's going on.

please don't let the story end here.

oderint, dum metuant: Let them hate, so long as they fear.

The following is the text of John Brady Kiesling's letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell. Mr. Kiesling is a career diplomat who has served in United States embassies from Tel Aviv to Casablanca to Yerevan.

“Dear Mr. Secretary:

I am writing you to submit my resignation from the Foreign Service of the United States and from my position as Political Counselor in U.S. Embassy Athens, effective March 7. I do so with a heavy heart. The baggage of my upbringing included a felt obligation to give something back to my country. Service as a U.S. diplomat was a dream job. I was paid to understand foreign languages and cultures, to seek out diplomats, politicians, scholars and journalists, and to persuade them that U.S. interests and theirs fundamentally coincided. My faith in my country and its values was the most powerful weapon in my diplomatic arsenal.

It is inevitable that during twenty years with the State Department I would become more sophisticated and cynical about the narrow and selfish bureaucratic motives that sometimes shaped our policies. Human nature is what it is, and I was rewarded and promoted for understanding human nature. But until this Administration it had been possible to believe that by upholding the policies of my president I was also upholding the interests of the American people and the world. I believe it no longer.

The policies we are now asked to advance are incompatible not only with American values but also with American interests. Our fervent pursuit of war with Iraq is driving us to squander the international legitimacy that has been America's most potent weapon of both offense and defense since the days of Woodrow Wilson. We have begun to dismantle the largest and most effective web of international relationships the world has ever known. Our current course will bring instability and danger, not security.

The sacrifice of global interests to domestic politics and to bureaucratic self-interest is nothing new, and it is certainly not a uniquely American problem. Still, we have not seen such systematic distortion of intelligence, such systematic manipulation of American opinion, since the war in Vietnam. The September 11 tragedy left us stronger than before, rallying around us a vast international coalition to cooperate for the first time in a systematic way against the threat of terrorism. But rather than take credit for those successes and build on them, this Administration has chosen to make terrorism a domestic political tool, enlisting a scattered and largely defeated Al Qaeda as its bureaucratic ally. We spread disproportionate terror and confusion in the public mind, arbitrarily linking the unrelated problems of terrorism and Iraq. The result, and perhaps the motive, is to justify a vast misallocation of shrinking public wealth to the military and to weaken the safeguards that protect American citizens from the heavy hand of government. September 11 did not do as much damage to the fabric of American society as we seem determined to so to ourselves. Is the Russia of the late Romanovs really our model, a selfish, superstitious empire thrashing toward self-destruction in the name of a doomed status quo?

We should ask ourselves why we have failed to persuade more of the world that a war with Iraq is necessary. We have over the past two years done too much to assert to our world partners that narrow and mercenary U.S. interests override the cherished values of our partners. Even where our aims were not in question, our consistency is at issue. The model of Afghanistan is little comfort to allies wondering on what basis we plan to rebuild the Middle East, and in whose image and interests. Have we indeed become blind, as Russia is blind in Chechnya, as Israel is blind in the Occupied Territories, to our own advice, that overwhelming military power is not the answer to terrorism? After the shambles of post-war Iraq joins the shambles in Grozny and Ramallah, it will be a brave foreigner who forms ranks with Micronesia to follow where we lead.

We have a coalition still, a good one. The loyalty of many of our friends is impressive, a tribute to American moral capital built up over a century. But our closest allies are persuaded less that war is justified than that it would be perilous to allow the U.S. to drift into complete solipsism. Loyalty should be reciprocal. Why does our President condone the swaggering and contemptuous approach to our friends and allies this Administration is fostering, including among its most senior officials. Has oderint dum metuant really become our motto?

I urge you to listen to America's friends around the world. Even here in Greece, purported hotbed of European anti-Americanism, we have more and closer friends than the American newspaper reader can possibly imagine. Even when they complain about American arrogance, Greeks know that the world is a difficult and dangerous place, and they want a strong international system, with the U.S. and EU in close partnership. When our friends are afraid of us rather than for us, it is time to worry. And now they are afraid. Who will tell them convincingly that the United States is as it was, a beacon of liberty, security, and justice for the planet?

Mr. Secretary, I have enormous respect for your character and ability. You have preserved more international credibility for us than our policy deserves, and salvaged something positive from the excesses of an ideological and self-serving Administration. But your loyalty to the President goes too far. We are straining beyond its limits an international system we built with such toil and treasure, a web of laws, treaties, organizations, and shared values that sets limits on our foes far more effectively than it ever constrained America's ability to defend its interests.

I am resigning because I have tried and failed to reconcile my conscience with my ability to represent the current U.S. Administration. I have confidence that our democratic process is ultimately self-correcting, and hope that in a small way I can contribute from outside to shaping policies that better serve the security and prosperity of the American people and the world we share.”

************************************************************

I could never have stated the same sentiments so well. I think it says much when carreer diplomats resign because of the short-sighted, self-serving, narrow-minded, destructive interestes of the current administration. This resignation letter is from a man who was appointed by Ronald Reagan, Dubya's supposed hero. Dubya is wrecking the country that I so dearly love.

Hello Everyone:

First, work has taken over my life again. Got to pay those bills, you know. Thus, it is not leaving me a lot of time for writing. I know many of you are waiting for APTL chapter 10 and/or TLW chapter 13. Unfortunately, the wait is going to have to continue for a couple of days. Unlike other instances where my job has consumed all of my time, this has a very predictable end-point. We are not talking months here, or even weeks. By sometime next week, I will be back in the clear.

Second, I am on a short story kick. There are a lot of idea scraps rolling around in my head that have nothing to do with with any of the major works. Since I am compelled to write, even if it is just for half an hour, I am fiddling around with another short story... probably closer to a novella to tell you the truth. Thus, expecte to see one or two more short stories emerge from me in the very near future.

Just so you know, I am dying to get back to APTL and TLW. However, I know that I need to have the time to commit to the stories when I am writing them. If I make the attempt at this time, I will mess up the plots. I need to exercise a bit of self-control in this respect. The stories will continue!

That's all for now.

I'd like to introduce myself: I'm Scott. I suspect I will hanging around here now that I have found the site and Drake's stories.

I found my way here after having read, Dewey's, For The Love Of Pete and Brian and Pete. Currently, I am reading, Finding His Own. I am sure I will have more to add after I have finished the story.

I did want to offer a 'site' related observation though. (I suspect if I read back, much of what I am about to write is probably known.)

Drake, your site has some broken links and some frame issues:
1. The main top frame with links to 'Hockey' and 'Links' are broken.
2. The link to 'T-Journal' off the story page is also broken.

FHO has some frame issues

3. The table of content (left navigation frame) for chapters, FHO: Interlude Three and FHO: Chapter 43 target the text to the wrong frame. They drop the text in the navagation frame and not the main body frame. (I have not checked the source code.)
4. I have noticed that the links at the bottom of each chapter, to move to the next chapter, unfortunately eliminate the left navigation frame.

I hope this helps.

***

I am really exciting to have found 'here' and look forward to reading Drake and contributing to the forum.

Best regards,
Scott

Stop the New Patriot Act!

Under the guise of terrorism, Attorney General Ashcroft has been secretly preparing new legislation that would significantly reduce privacy protections and essentially eliminate some of the most fundamental checks and balances on governmental power.

The draft "Domestic Security Enhancement Act" contains a multitude of law enforcement and intelligence gathering powers -- many of which are not related to terrorism -- that would severely undermine basic constitutional rights. For example, the proposed legislation would allow the sampling and cataloguing of innocent Americans' DNA without court order and without consent.

Take Action now! We can stop this legislation and tell our elected officials that they must exercise appropriate oversight over the Justice Department and FBI to prevent abuse of power. Click here to get more information and to send a free fax:

Hi All:

I had a blockage in my head regarding APTL, so I had to do something. I wrote a short story to help pull the hairballs out of the drain. It worked. Inroad is now posted. It is not the edited version, but I had to get rid of it or else I would tinker it to death. G is working on the edit, and I will post the edited version when he gets done.

Once again, I dove into a slightly (?) strange realm with this tale. I had to write something total different from APTL so my wee little noggin could work on that story. This story just strikes me as funny. Not funny 'Ha ha', but funny as in ironic. I think you'll get the point.

Enjoy!

Greetings Everyone:

Did some more tinkering with the web site today. The Short Stories section is now live. I am going to finish out the rest of the site over the next week or so.

Well, I fell in love with programming again. I've been going like gangbusters at the office. I just can't get enough of kah-kah sometimes! My head is filled with code instead of stories, so that's one of the reasons why I focused on the site today.

Poll
Is anyone interested in a real-time chat room at my site? If I get at least 15 - 20 who are interested, I will set one up for a trial and see how it goes. Let me know.

Hello All:

I had a great conversation with my editor, G, yesterday. He is managing to plough through the ton of material I sent him. G assures me that edited versions will be arriving sometime this weekend. This is all APTL stuff to boot. Thus, I think that by Sunday night I should be getting around to posting some of the revised APTL.

That's about it for now.

It's kind of a Happy Birthday to DrakeTales...

Six months ago I opened the doors to DrakeTales. In that time: it has been revised three times that I know of, sections have been added, I have experimented with html code, and it has given me the chance to play with graphics.

What I find really astounding is that the site has been visited over 22,000 times (and I delete my visit hits when updating or checking links). WOW!

Thanks to all of you who have dropped by!

This has been a simply incredible venture for me.

Salutations Everyone:

G is indeed back from vacation, and he has begun work on the mamoth pile of story chapters I have sent him. Thus...

I am pleased to announced that chapter 13 of The Last Word is now posted. This is will be the last chapter I post for a while as I work on A Place to Live.

As soon as I hit a natural break point in APTL, I will return to TLW and plough through some more chapters. I tried to work alternately on the two stories, but I need to complete large segments before I can move on. Hence, my plan to post alternating chapters of APTL and TLW is not going to happen. Instead, whole sections will appear (a chapter or two at a time). It may be a week or so before everyone's schedules get into sync, so please bear with us.

As always, my love and thanks to Dewey and G for all that have and are doing for me. The end result is a better product than I could churn out alone.

That about does it for me at this time.

Greetings All:

I have just spoken with my main editor, and he is returned from his worldwide vacation. G and I had a wonderful chat, and I cannot stress how much I miss not being able to run over and visit with him. 13,500 miles makes it a bit more than simply popping in for a visit. Anyway, he assures me that he will continue his work with me. He is in possession of everything that is ready, and now it awaits his magic touch. There is one thing that I am going to emphasize at this time:

If anyone complains that the rate of release is too slow, I will personally block your IP address from my web site. Not only will I block the IP address, but I will use name resolution to secure your domain name and identity, and block that as well. This is no idle threat! You can bitch and holler at me all you want, but G is and will remain sacrosanct. G edits my work out of the kindness of his heart and his generous spirit. We all owe him a debt of gratitude. Please, do not mistake this as joke.

Now that I have just finished intimidating my reading audience with horrific retribution, let me assure you that I continue to write. I am up to and halfway finished with the new version of APTL, chapter 6. Once I begin to post the revised chapters, I am going to take down the old version in its entirety.

That's about it from me.

Hey All:

TLW chapter 13 is in the can and waiting for the editor to give it the magic touch.

APTL Prologue had been re-written, along with APTL chapters 1 and 2 (I'm working on 3). Those also await editing by my superb editing friends. Thus, there should be a quite a bit to read in the next week or so. About APTL... It might be hard to notice what was changed in the first two chapters, but the real changes start taking place in chapter 3 and onward. I am very pleased with my decision to do this. I think it lends the story more strength and is more realistic. It focuses on some fundamental themes that were missing from the first version. It's good, and I think you will agree.

That's all for now. Getting back to writing.

Greetings All:

It is my pleasure to announce that the time has come to release three new chapters of Finding His Own. Yes, you read that correctly: Three Brand New Chapters of FHO. These chapters take place right after FHO - Interlude Two.

I know that they are not fully integrated in the rest of the story. That awaits for the fabled time when I get around to finishing the edit of FHO. They may appear out of sync with the rest of the story, but that will be corrected in time. In the meantime, however, just go with it.

I decided to release these at this time since Dewey is working on a section of Brian and Pete that will deal directly with some of the information contained in the new FHO chapters. The really special part of these new chapters is the fact that Dewey and I wrote them together... in full collaboration. It was beyond great to work with him so closely on a story.

Enjoy!

Hello Everyone:

Well, chapter 12 of The Last Word is now posted. I hope you enjoy it.

I am sending out the warning early: It will be at least two weeks before another chapter is posted. My main editor is on vacation and will not be home until then. I will be writing the entire time, so I would expect about 2 or 3 chapters to be posted at one time.

A Place to Live Update:
After some careful and serious thought, I am going to re-write the opening of the story (all of the chapters currently posted). There are some elements in the story as it currently exists with which I am not pleased. The work on TLW allowed my brain time to evaluate APTL and see where it is going awry. Hence, I am going to rework the story to some extent.

My Writing Schedule (proposed):
Within the next two chapters of TLW, I am going to start work on APTL. As I have stated before, I will begin to alternate between the two stories in regard to writing and posting. I can't say exactly what the timing is going to be like, but I am planning on posting at least a chapter a week of one of the stories. It could be more... you'll just have to wait and see.

That's about all for now.
