Subject: Actually...the 80's movie did more justice to the books than you're giving it credit
In reply to: Drake 's message, "Yeah, the TV show is an attempt to do the book justice... unlike it's movie made in the 80's..." on 15:16:08 11/12/00 Sun

Think about it. After watching the movie, you sit back, take a breath and think "Ok...what the HELL did I just see?" And no matter how hard you think, no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to figure out what the answer to that question is. Much like the books. After I read each book, I sat back, took a deeth breath, and asked myself "What the HELL did I just read?" The only things anyone picks out from the books are as follows.

-Atriedes are the good guys
-Harkonnen are the bad guys
-Fremen kick ass
-So do sand worms

That's pretty much it...the rest of the plot is hidden inside a mass conglomerate of words that are stung together with no seeming order and punctuation added where it looks like it might fit. Apparently, Spice is some sort of end-all be all drug. Cures alot of stuff, but is addictive. A sign of addiction is unnaturally blue eyes. Paul Atriedes comes with his father, Leto, to Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only planet where Spice is found. The Harkonnen are also there, and they kill most of the Atriedes, including Duncan Idaho, who was REALLY REALLY cool and I was really pissed off when he died.

So Leto dies, and Paul gets away into the desert with his mother, Jessica. There, they meet up with the Fremen, and a few years later, Paul is now leader of the Fremen, and has twin kids, a boy and a girl. The boy is named Leto, after his grandfather. Then Leto gets covered by baby sandworms and for some reason never clearly explained, will slowly begin to turn into a giant sandworm himself. This is a slow process that will take 5,000 years. It's never explained why it takes so long, or how everyone knows it will take that long. It just does, and Leto spends most of the time whining that he can't have sex....because he's a giant worm. Then eventually he dies, because Duncan Idaho drops him in a river. Sandworms can't stand water.

Yea, but Duncan Idaho died. Not that that stops anyone. Leto kept some of his cells around, and keep regrowing him. Idaho gets "insolent" and so Leto regrows him, kills him, regrows him, and so forth.

The movie only took things up to when Paul came back out of the desert and drove off the Harkonnens. It might've gone farther, except I don't think the producers could understand the plot. Hell...what I've just written is only the barest surface of nearly 2,400 pages. I haven't even mentioned Mentats, Bene Gesserit, or the Emperor. I think Paul had the right idea. At the end of the second book, he walks off into the desert for no real reason and dies. I wish I had too.
