Subject: Hee hee hee....funny debate going on in the b.net War Room forums...

It seems that the mathematically inept are challenging the mathetically superior, and making themselves look very stupid in the process.

You see, 0.999... (meaning that the 9's go on for ever and ever and ever) is another really nifty way to write "1". It seems that some people have difficulty accepting this, using arguements such as: "They look different!"

Since I know some of you are likely looking at me funny, I shall explain.

1 / 3 = 0.333.... correct?
0.333 x 3 = 0.999....

Now, if 1 / 3 = 0.333... then .333 x 3 should equal 1, correct?

Thus, 0.999... is another way of writing 1.

Or, another way to prove it.

1.000...
-0.999...

Try to subtract. You get 0.000...(infinity of 0's)

If 1 - 0.999... = 0, then they must be the same.

Yay me! I know stuff!

For those of you who think "Math for Elementary Teachers" is blow-off, this was something we kinda had to figure out without any assistance whatsoever. This is the sorta stuff that gets done in that class. You totally have to change the way ya think in that class.
