I think that it's important on a certain level. If you are a person that is going to work or is currently working in a customer service environment (i.e. call center, medicine, teacher, etc.), then yes I think that it should be important for you to develop some bilingual skills if even on a small level. It would make you an effective and efficient communicator. In some cases it could even make the difference in a sale.

If the person you are pitching an idea to doesn't speak English extremely well or isn't up on American dialogue, it can be intimidating for that person to communicate their ideas or needs to you. Thus, a potential client could be lost to someone else who does know how to communicate with them in their own language.

However, even if you didn't know the person's language, you could communicate effectively if you even learned about other cultures and religious backgrounds. The reason why is because these are things that directly affect how someone interacts and communicates with others. One's beliefs play directly into daily communication activities.

So overall, yes I definitely believe that it's important for people to develop bilingual communication skills. Especially now as there are so many different nationalities that are currently living and working in the United Stats. Also, too, now we live in the age of the Internet and this has made the world an even smaller place to live. Therefore, our chances of working and communicating with others in other lands is ever increasing.
