Ebonics has been around since slavery days. The people who enslaved Africans made sure to get Africans from different cultures and who spoke different languages so they could not understand each other or English for that matter, in order to keep the Africans from being able to come together and rebel. The slave owners tried to keep the English language from them by not allowing them education. They also forced them to not practice their language and cultures from their previous land. The Africans (being smarter than what the slave owners thought they were) ended up taking all of these cultures and making their own culture. Ebonics is the language, which is some English and some African languages mixed together. They also could communicate with each other without the slave owner knowing what was going on. I feel it is important to know this history behind it, and to know that it isn’t some slang, improper English etc. Ebonics is just a total different language like Spanish etc. I feel the history about it should be taught in schools, that teachers understand this history, and be compassionate about teaching the differences, and going about it like they do in ESL. The children need to keep the culture and language especially at home, but realize that in order to fit “in” they have to use English while conducting business in the US.
