I didn't get a chance to respond to this last week, but for what my two cents is worth I wanted to respond when I could. I don't know a lot about Ebonics, but I do know that a couple of years ago there was some push to incorporate it in California into the public school system. I see a lot of discussion around this issue and I believe it is probably a very sensitive one to some people. My basic theory is that we should all be sensitive to the different cultures around us and understand that there are different dialects in whatever languages that occur. For instance, if you take someone who has been taught through education to speak Spanish, they may not be able to speak to all Spanish speaking individuals, there are different regions of the world where the dialects will be different and understanding that and not discounting the facts are important. I have a hard time understanding how we would ever be able to teach all of the different languages in our public school systems and I am not sure that it is up to our public schools to teach everything. Maybe it would be in our best interest to take the time to learn on our own the difference among those around us.
