Subject: This is freedom?

The story was in today's Herald. Biketoberfest During the gathering (which was the first since the repeal of the helet law, there were 5 casualities. (4 were not wearing helmets).
Twenty two were hospitalized. Seven in ICU. The cost? $32,000 a week.
The law states that if you want to ride without head protection you must have $10,000 in personal insurance.
Guess who gets to pay the rest?
You and me.
I have a friend who rides a lot. He was in an accident 3 months ago. When I saw him next he had a cast on one arm and one leg. He was one of the lucky ones. He hadn't been wearing a helmet.
He would have left a 4 year old daughter and a wife to grieve for him and fight to survive.
He swears he will never ride again without a helmut. To much on the line he says.

I rode bikes for many years. Had to put two down. One was my fault. One was not.
Though I no longer ride, I still had my old helmet in the back of the closet. Some things are hard to get rid of.
I looked at all the scratches and dents on what was many years ago a shiny skyblue helmet.
Then I dropped it off at the nearest motorcycle dealer and asked that it be given to someone who could use it.
