Another day, another draft passes by for the lowly Charlottetown Islanders. For a change, the Islanders held a top 5 pick in the draft and they used it to select highly rated goaltender Cam Ward out of the Carolina Hurricans organization.

"After losing Ari Ahonen to his clock expiring, we felt the need to bring a top ranked goalie prospect into our system to go along with Hannu. We feel Cam is on his way up after signing a contract with Carolina last season he should be on the fast track to the NHL".

Goalies are often the victims of the draft clock rule due to their development time so Cam already being signed probably played a big role in the pick.

In the 2nd round, Charlottetown went with a boom or bust prospect in the form of Kyle Wellwood, the 4th leading scorer in the AHL. Wellwood has been on fire with the Baby Leafs but prospects have been known to do that there and then flop with the big club so time will tell.

Charlottetowns two 3rd round picks saw them select 2 defenseman out of the Vancouver Canucks organization who are quietly climbing up the prospect charts. First it was Brett Skinner who is currently playing for Denver University. Skinner had 28 points in 27 games as of February the 6th for Denver. With their next pick the Isles took scrappy defenseman Kevin Bieksa who is having a solid rookie campaign for Manitoba. Bieksa leads the 4th best team in the AHL in scoring from defenseman with 8 goals and 25 points. He is also a solid +9 and has put up 126 minutes in penalties,
