Quebec City

Your 9-1, in first place, and one of your best centers who has been out for 9 of those games returns from injury. Can the situation possibly get better than that? The short answer is yes after a recent trade brought perennial superstar Jaromir Jagr into the fold.

The trade which also featured Tomas Kaberle saw team favorite Sergei Zubov move to Winnipeg and also featured Jeff O’Neill, a pick swap and some cash considerations. The move for Zubov was difficult both for the player and the GM. Dean Belanger didn’t really want to move Zubov but he had to make a move to improve his right wing. To get quality you must give up quality and Zubov certainly offers that to his new club Winnipeg.

Quebec’s position of strength is defense and the strong play of Tom Poti made Zubov and his $6,000,000 salary expendable. Additionally, Kaberle is not a downgrade by any means. The centerpiece of the deal is Jagr who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. By making the move, Belanger has removed any doubts about his team’s willingness to do anything to contend. “We even had talks with another team about possibly moving Mario Lemieux.” Said Belanger in a recent press conference to welcome the new players. “No one and I mean no one is untouchable if there is a deal that I think can make our team stronger!”

Jagr was more than excited about the trade. “I can’t believe I’m here! To play with guys like Mario, Blake, and Burke is a dream come true.” Jagr also has showed on the ice that he and his new center Pavol Demitra are going to get along just fine. Jagr has 3 goals and 5 points in his first two games and he already has a game winner. In response to the negative press coming out of Winnipeg, Jagr tried to be professional. “You’ve been run out of that town too Scott, so you know what I feel like. I’m here now and I’ll let my play speak for itself. We are here to win…period. The rest of that garbage reflects on that team as far as I’m concerned.”

The biggest reason Quebec added Jagr was to improve their terrible power play, which is the only black eye for the team early in this new season. The return of Lemieux should also help in that regard.

In another roster related move, both Mathew Barnaby and Artem Chubarov were sent to the minors after their poor start. Ales Hemsky’s strong play on the farm earned him a look see and after a very week preseason, management gave Jeff Halpern one more shot at the 4th line job. In two games during Mario’s injury, Halpern recorded 3 points and added a tidy +5. Pat Burns closed to door on the doghouse for Brendan Shanahan who was also mired in a terrible slump for the first 8 games. Shanahan has scored in the past two games and looks much more comfortable in the rigid Quebec system. “I was trying to press too much after signing the new deal in the off season.” Noted Shanahan “It took a while but now I’m feeling much better. Not to make excuses either but with Mario out we kinda had a revolving door at center for a while. Halpern was great the last two games though and now we get Briere back for the first time since game 1.”
