[Saskatoon, SK] For a team that is last in their conference, the Saskatoon Silos looked like a very relaxed team as they prepared for another road game, this one in Calgary. No doubt, the Silos victory over the defending Hoser Cup champs is partially responsible for the team's renewed vigor.
The club has so far gone 2-0-2 on their current 7-game road trip, and is 2-0-3 in their last five after losing their first five games. Their most recent success came against the defending champs from Halifax in the Harpoons own building.
"I think the Harpoons took us pretty lightly, and we came up with our best effort of the season", said Silos head coach Bob Hartley. "Really, we've played pretty well overall on this road trip, but we can always play better."
Leading the way for the Silos is rookie left wing Ruslan Fedotenko. Fedotenko is the club's leading scorer, as well as the top point-getter amongst GWHL rookies. Fedotenko's linemates, Craig Conroy and Scott Young, are right behind their younger linemate in scoring, with the first line starting to assert themselves after a very shaky start.
But even a team in the midst of a streak of good fortune can make deals, and the Silos are no exception to this rule. With veteran left wing Dave Andreychuk languishing in the minors as a member of the Silos farm team in Prince Albert, Silos GM Ken McKenna elected to move the aging winger for some veteran help on the blueline. Coming to Saskatoon from Montreal is defenseman Jason York, a veteran who also was toiling in the minors with Montreal's farm club.
"I felt that our defensive unit was a bit green, and could use another veteran presence", said McKenna. "Both Jason and Andy are good players that shouldn't be playing in the minors, so this move opens things up for both players. We're happy to have Jason in the fold, and I'm sure Montreal is pleased to have Dave on board."
So what is the goal for the next 10-game stretch?
"We would like to get to .500 by the end of this next stretch", said Hartley. "We still need to tighten up a bit more defensively, but the goals are starting to come. Adding Jason York could help us a bit in both areas."
