Edmonton, AB - Typically, GM Sean Gallagher has issued ultimatums and then given his team time to make changes. This year, the changes have come, but Gallagher made moves anyway.
"Last year, I made some threats and the team came together. This year, I've made the threats, but I followed through. Three-game winning streak or not, I felt we needed some new blood in the room."
The new blood comes at a cost of course. And the Montreal GM's aggressive moves will see players like Patrick Marleau and Bryan McCabe shipped out of town. In addition, mainstays Dan Boyle and Mark Parrish have also turned in their Marauder togs.
In return, however, the Marauders will see players like Alexei Kovalev, Ed Jovanovski, Al MacInnis and Olli Jokinen pull the black "M" over their shoulders this week.
Said Gallagher, "it's hard to see guys that I brought in here and watched them flourish... to see them go and know I made it happen is hard. I wish those guys nothing but luck. They are going to good teams and I know they'll have success in their new environments. On the other hand, we addressed scoring deficiencies, leadership and experience issues and some defensive issues with these moves.
"I really felt that I needed more of a presence on the blueline, which Chopper [MacInnis] and Jovo [Jovanovski] will bring. Plus I really felt like I needed to give Richie [Brad Richards] a better scorer for his wing, which is where Kovalev comes in.
"I hate to lose Marleau, but Jokinen is no slouch in that spot. I think he'll fit in well here."
The new players are all still flying in to meet the road-weary club from points abroad, but the team hopes to get at least one full practice in before the new-look Marauders take the ice against Charletown on Friday night.
The Montreal faithful will get their first look at the new players on Saturday, when the Marauders host Toronto. Good tickets are still available at the Montreal Forum box office.
