In a shocking move yesterday, Yellowknife Blades GM has dealt away superstar player and fan favorite Markus Naslund to the Quebec Remparts. Also moving to Quebec is defensive tough guy Jason Smith and a "significant" amount of cash. Hayes wouldn't comment on the amount of cash involved, but it is rumored to be in the neighborhood of $10 - $15 million.

Coming to the Blades are a couple of talented youngsters in Alex Tanguay and Nick Boynton.

"My team was struggling and it became clear to me I had to do something" said Hayes.

"Quebec is looking to win now and a player of Naslund's calibre was intriguing to them. We hate to lose Markus, he has been great on the ice, but also in the community of Yellowknife. He is a class act, through and through. We wish him best of luck in Quebec."

While Blades fans will be disappointed, the players coming here are no slouches. Tanguay has shown signs of brilliance, suggesting he may break out as soon as next season. And Nick Boynton is younger and perhaps has more upside than Jason Smith in the long run.

Asked if this means the Blades are tanking this season, Hayes responded, "absolutely not. Tangs and Boynton can both play at a high level right now. We expect them to fit in nicely on this team and hopefully help us win some games. In the not too distant future, our fans will really like this trade."

It remains to be seen if losing a favorite like Naslund will have an adverse effect on attendance, but if the Blades can start winning some more games, all should be forgotten.
