Montreal, PQ - Despite the second-worst record in the Great White Hockey League, the Montreal Marauders' GM Sean Gallagher has sent a clear message to his team: This season is not over and the playoffs are still the goal.

"We're doing the equivalent of heading out and burning our bridges behind us," said Gallagher, "there's no other way but up. I expect a playoff berth."

The metaphoric bridge that was burned? Montreal's 1st round pick in the upcoming draft, which is currently a lottery pick. It was traded last evening in a monster deal with the Whitehorse squad.

"We got slaughtered in the deal, but Jeff [Grothier, Whitehorse's GM] and I both felt we needed a big shake up, so we did it."

In addition to the first rounder, Montreal gave up starting goalie Evgeni Nabokov, power forward Keith Tkachuk, developing prospect Pavel Brendl and millions of dollars. In return, Montreal received perennial all-star Martin Brodeur and young offensive whiz Ilya Kovalchuk. Brodeur's contract was renegotiated in the process of the trade.

"We're always looking to improve," said Gallagher, "and I think we did here. It cost us a ton, but hopefully we can get this this started up.

Rumors continue to swirl that Gallagher is still looking for another centerman and some defensive help. Clearly, anything can happen in Montreal.
