Montreal, PQ - After seizing the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference by winning five straight games, the Montreal Marauders have seen their hold on the spot slip. The team lost three straight games heading into Sunday night's matchup against Steeltown.
That win, coupled with London's loss to Saskatoon means that Montreal has a slim three point lead over the Lasers, with London holding one game in hand.
"We can't control what happens to them, we just have to handle our own business," said team Captain Dave Andreychuk, "we just have to assume that they're going to win every game, which means we have to try to win every game.
"Even the smallest letdown now opens the door for them to take this spot from us. They're a great team. They could easily take this back if we let them."
With few exceptions, the Marauders have listened to Andreychuk's advice. New acquisition Peter Forsberg is playing at a better than point-per-game pace, while Martin Brodeur has been consistently fantastic in new for the team. Ilya Kovalchuk and Todd Bertuzzi have clicked on the top line, leading Bertuzzi to second place in league goalscoring and second in total points. He also leads the team in +/- rating and in Star Points.
Likewise, the team has gotten some clutch scoring from Rod Brind'Amour and Alexei Kovalev, while Olli Jokinen and Steve Sullivan have provided consistent scoring from the second line.
"We've shown great potential so far," said head coach John Tortorella, "but that potential means squat if we don't execute over the next month."
Montreal hosts Yellowknife on Monday night. The game is already sold out.
