>Assignment 5 (Sex roles): July 9

Growing up I can always recall both of my parents working full-time jobs. My mother has been working the same job as long as I can remember and my dad has had a few different jobs, throughout the course of my childhood. My parents always encourage me to do my best in whatever it was that I was doing, so people wouldn't say I didn't give my all. My mother is a firm believer in women being independent and my dad is pretty much laid back but believes that academics is the key to success.

My parents like many did chores that were gender role related. My mother cooked, cleaned, did laundry and took care of the children. My dad did most of the yard work, taking out the garbage and fixing things. My dad believed in these gender roles but my mother was not hung up on them. My dad never taught me how to cut grass or never asked me to take out the garbage. He made sure I helped my mother in any way possible.

I was a tomboy growing up so I played sports most of the time. Even though my chores were gender based my parents supposed me in every way, whether it was coming to watch me play a sport or coming to my public speaking contest. I don't remember ever feeling like my gender limited me in any way.

My dad is a little better about gender roles now. There was a time he truly believed that there were certain things that only women should do and certain things men should do. He still won't wash dishes but I have noticed that he'll help wash clothes and he tries to cook desserts from time to time. I have a younger sister and brother and I have noticed that my dad really doesn't like it when my brother wants to help my mother cook. I believe he is still in that mind set a little but I'm hoping he'll come out of it one day.

The way the world is now, both men and women need to know how to do a little bit of everything. Whether it's cooking, cleaning, cutting grass or taking out the garbage.
