I grew up in a single parent home. My mom raised my older brother and I on her own. My father has always been very involved but we never lived with him except for when we were younger, I don’t remember this time. Needless to say, I am used to the idea of women doing everything. My mother did everything changing oil, cleaning, laundry, mowing the lawn, fixing the toilet. She had an array of skills that are typical to both genders. My mother worked full time so she did not have time to do everything and take care of my brother and I.
So, my brother and I were given weekly tasks to help my mother take care of the house. My brother would wash cars, mow the lawn, take out the trash, clean the gutters, etc. I on the other hand helped my mom clean, watered the flowers, folded laundry, etc. I think that through the tasks that my mother we were introduced to gender roles in the home. There were several task given to me and my brother both which I now think of as gender neutral. These task include vacuming, cooking, cleaning the dishes, and taking care of the dog.
