Subject: Assignment 8 Sex Roles

My interpretation of truly free personality is to be allowed to be whomever and whatever you want. I don't think it's possible in today's society. If I had to choose an event to support my answer, I would have to go with same sex marriages in the United States. It is one of the largest controversial topics today. Traditionally a marriage consists of a man and a woman, not of the same sex. If traditional afforded everyone the opportunity to have a truly free personality, same sex marriages wouldn't be an issue. Society as a whole dictates our personalities to us. In order to becaome successful we must play by the rules. An example of how society dictates who we are would be the requirement to wear uniforms, or the inablility to wear your hair in braids for certain jobs. What clothes we wear and how we wear our hair are small reflections of who we are. If we are forced to look differently for the sake of a job, we are not displaying a reflection of who we truly are. So to answer the question plainly, no I don't feel that traditional sex roles contribute positively to the development of a truly free personality.
