Subject: DEVELOPMENT OF A TRULY FREE PERSONALITY

Personality - (1) The characteristics or qualities that form an individual's character. (2) Qualities that make someone interesting or popular.

In order to have a truly free personality one would be without character or characteristics that make up an individual. In the early development of our lives our personality development is biological. As our life-span continues we are influenced by family, peers, friends and individual's outside the home and various organizations. I think that traditional sex roles contribute positively toward our personality but, that depends on from whom we are learning. If our influences are from positive individual then our personalities will reflect positivity but if we are taught by negative individual then our personalities will be negative unless, there are biological reasons. I don't think it is possible to have a truly free personality. We as individual imitate what we see. For instant into today's society, we see cross gender dressing, we see people having their physical being surgically altered and with this change does not bring about a truly free personality although, the individual has switched or changed society's label of them. The individual's new gender role mirrors what they perceive that opposite sex role to be and there had to be a model be it real or derived from television or a magazine. I believe society as a whole does not look positively at this type of behavior but, some members of society are excepting of this type behavior. As a child, we are taught who to be after, we become of legal age it is our choice as to who we want to be. We decide what clothes to wear, how we dress, how we behave-ethically/morally, we decide if we want to be excepted by others-popular and we decide if we physically want to continue to be a male or female. So again, I don't think it's possible to possess a truly free personality.
