Ah, but that would require CLAMP to get over their new-found dedication to bland shounen-ish crap and remember X ;).

It would also require THEM to remember that the earth and humanity are at stake here, too... sometimes I wonder if they really do, because there's next to ZERO discussion on it in the manga. For all the interesting moral conundrums there could have been as a result of the plot of the story, in reality the DoE have simply been painted as the 'bad guys' since the beginning, end of discussion. The only DoE that could question it- Kusanagi- condemns their actions as well and won't fight for them. It's the FANS, in my opinion, that bring the moral debate to X, because the story itself short-changes it to the point of non-existence.

There's some interesting points made throughout the story on various other things (Subaru's 'There isn't any way for everyone to be happy' made me cheer, as I think it's one of the most intelligent philisophical comments to come out of a manga, period) but on the subject of humankind versus the earth, it's been humanity all the way since the beginning.

Or perhaps I'm not putting enough faith in CLAMP and this has been a comment on how self-absorbed humans are all along, and Kamui will realize it soon enough. But with Karen and others telling him things like 'Don't worry about the fate of the world, just follow your wishes' I don't think that's likely.
