I am re-reading X because itīs being published here in Brasil and the august volume was the 9th. Itīs really better to read the manga directly in your language because you can understand lots of things that seemed blurry before.
Per example, the fact that Kamui wants Fuuma back, even if that means itīs a selfish act, because he might remember he killed Kotori or Kamui will have to tell him all the truth--waht implies the fact a part of Kamui, the DoE Kamui, killed her. But as we can see further in X 19(Asukaīs last installments), the future "that has been foreordained" is as shown in a page with a sad Fuuma holding Kamuiīs dead body. Plus, in the last Asuka installment, Kamui says "All I want is Fuuma back! That is my only wish!", and Subaru replies, as Fuuma holds up the shinken, "No, Kamui, thereīs something else. And if you donīt figure it out, nothing will change."
Itīs pretty clear for me now that Subaru, before the X 16 tragedy, used to think his wish was all that mattered in his miserable life; however, he didnīt know things could get even worse, and after he finds out the truth about Seishirouīs wish and Hokutoīs spell, he tells Kamui "Thereīs not a way everyone can be happy". He obviously meant what Dark Kamui says all the time in the last X tankohons--that people are always selfish and by wishing some things, they "forget whatīs important".
Subaru forgot what was important, as well as Seishirou; they both could have been better together, but Subaru ignored Seishirouīs opinion about lots of things in their lives, and Seishirou didnīt care Subaru could still be in love with him; the lack of communication between them was great, but even so DoE Kamui tells Subaru in X 18:"that man was really selfish". Seishirou even asked Subaru before activating the spell, "isnīt your wish to kill me?". Subaru replies "no", but even so Seishirou activates the spell and makes a perfect example of the problem about humans that DoE Kamui talks about all the time(the same goes with Saya, that leaves her family for Tooru, Saiki who dies for Hinoto and Hokuto, maybe the worst example, trusting a man like Seishirou with something terribly serious and powerful not knowing the spell she cast would actually make his wish even easier to become reality).
I believe that the only way Fuuma can return is with Dark Kamuiīs death;that can only be possible if the DoH Kamui dies as well. Thatīs why people will think Kamuiīs wish to bring Fuuma back is selfish: how can you bring back to life a soul that lost his entire family in a situation heīll see, totally confused, that the last person that remained alive for him is now dead in his arms, apparently killed by himself?
The only way Kamui can make Fuuma happy is to kill the DoE Kamui, letting go of his wish to simply bring Fuuma back no matter what tragedy is implied in that(Dark Kamui even suggestly said in X 16 that "if I knew the person I loved the most HAD to die, Iīd kill him/her with my own hands"). That way heīll be fulfilling his motherīs wish--that he would protect the people he cared about the most and "not chose the wrong path", EVEN IF THAT MEANT HEīLL BE UNHAPPY. Maybe thatīs why Subaru, after changing a lot because of Seishirouīs death, told him "thereīs something more" and that "nothing will change if you donīt realize it"(people will always be selfish, forget whatīs important and the DoH will lose, proving that humanity really doensīt deserve a chance). That also explains why Kakyou told Kamui in X 10, "if you use the shinken, youīll bring Fuuma back, but that will lead to further tragedies". in other words, they fight, kamui canīt beat DoE Kamui because he canīt kill him(that would go against his wish of bringing Fuuma back)and the further tragedy is Fuumaīs unhappiness and the end of humanity(Fuuma dies in the end anyway, alone and probably insane). Or, Kamui indeed uses the shinken, killing Fuumaīs body and Dark Kamuiīs soul, bringing Fuumaīs self back for a few seconds before he dies in his arms, as confused as he would be in the first situation, but maybe in a more affordable way for both of them.
I feel really happy I finally realized this by re-reading the manga in my native language because this was a great problem for me to understand the X plot till now. As I know the CLAMP chicks, thereīs always a universal message in their works, and with X it couldnīt be different; but it seems, because itīs X after all, that this one special message was very difficult to be guessed by the fans; I hope Iīm right, cause thereīs no space for the plot to change to a different resolution now that the last thing we know is a bloody Kamui with a "oh, now I understand" face under a furious Fuuma holding a shinken and blood drops in the last scene of the page.
By the way, Hinotoīs mistery is something else Iīve been working on, and I got the following conclusion: Hinoto dreamed about her death and her sisterīs death; since we already know Kanoe died, it confirms the fact the dream she hid from her sister--the one the Dark Hinoto said "will not come to pass", with her dead body under a Kamuiīs shinken(we donīt know which one, the DoE or the DoH)--will really not come to pass. The Dark Hinoto is happy about that, because she never wanted to die; maybe the good, real, other whatever Hinoto got crazy because she knew either her or Kanoe would have to die someday, and she didnīt know how to live with that idea. As Kakyou said in X 9, sheīs manipulating people in order to get what she wants--at that moment, the scene of Kanoeīs death dream is shown. The question is, was Hinoto deceiving people to make sure she would live and her sister die, or the opposite(the way she screams "stop!" hiding her face in her hands as Kakyou shows her the dream could mean both possibilities). Plus, she knew that her remaining alive meant the DoE win and her sister dies. But that would only happen because of Dark Hinotoīs sudden appearance.
Where the hell did she come from? Itīs pretty ubelievable and ilogical to me that Hinoto simply "got mad" and "developed" another personality. And this other pesonality is the same thing that attacked Kamui in X 01. She controls shiki and has been attacking the DoH for a long time with them(remember Arashi and Seiichirou in X 05?) Because of Nataku we can also blame her for Fuumaīs dadīs death. And I donīt even want to think about who told Tooru her baby was for the sake of the Earth...
Speaking of Tooru, if the condition to give birth to the shinken is to marry a Togakushi, and TOORU was supposed to do that, does that imply that the "real" or "first, complete and original"(whatever^^;) Kamui is actually Fuuma? If Tooru had married Kyougo, she would give birth to the shinken; but would she give birth to Kamui as well? It will be great when we get to know whoīs Kamuiīs father, since the fact Saya replaced Tooru didnīt change the fact her baby would be the Kamui; does it mean it never mattered who his father was, cause Tooru was destined to be the Kamuiīs mother, or does it mean somebody(*coffs*Hinoto maybe?*coffs*) told them it had to be that way? I donīt think Kamuiīs father is not important, since Tokiko wanted to tell Kamui about him before her kidnapping(caused, by the way, by Hinotoīs shiki, the same who kept Kakyou imprisioned in that mansion...wow! I think Hinotoīs plan is the greatest mistery in this manga).
Oh, and before I forget, something else about Hinoto: in vol.03, she dreams with the two Kamuis and tells Souhi and Hien that the shinken was stolen. I had no idea why would that dream imply that, since it has nothing to do with anything(I still canīt figure out how an interpretation of "2 kamuis and shinkens dream" equals "the shinken was stolen"); but now that I know she was the one who told Toujou to build Nataku "for the end of the world"(as revealed to Karen in X 18), I think Hinoto knew the shinken was stolen when she had that dream simply because she gave Nataku that mission indirectly. Toujou built him so he would steal the shinken for the DoE.
Yeah, the real baddass in X seems to be Hinoto after all. But if she didnīt split in two opposite personalities, she wouldnīt need to do all those things...would she? something is still too blurry in X for me...somebody help please...and sorry if my words became spoilers to people who werenīt thinking this way till now. Though now I feel stupid I couldīt realize it before....ī_ī
