Subject: Single Parenting/Family

Its funny how studies are being done regarding single parenting and how many factors have been corelated to the idea of mothers raising children without fathers. As a single parent myself, I disagree with half of the research information because I beleive a child has just as many chances and opportunities coming from a single-parent home as those coming from a home where the mother and father are present. Though, some mothers or fathers fail their children and some do poor jobs of raising their children, some of us are still capable or raising wonderful, productive and successful children minus the behavioral and social issues.

In my last year of teaching in South Memphis I have struggled with this single parenting issue frequently. I agree that a child has many opportunities and chances coming out of a single parent household, but I think it really depends on the ability of the parent to meet the childs need and provide those opportunities. We spoke about this in class last week just briefly when somebody mentioned that for those opportunites to be there the single parent needs to be able to fulfill the role of both mother and father. I think it is possible and it is accomplished by many dedicated and driven single parents, but when the parent is working several jobs, has several children, and is struggling to make ends meet in a difficult area the odds tend to be stacked against the parent and children. However, there are those who will stop at nothing to make sure their child has every opportunity to succed as any child in a much more fortunate situation would.

>You are so correct. I substitute teach and have the opportunity to see the difference in the magnitude of class size. Teachers with class sizes greater than 20 have more discipline problems. As a result Criagmont High School willmove to a block schedule next year. The students said that the teachers needed more time to teach. I translate this as teachers have to spend too much time getting the students to settle down before actualteaching can take place. The block schedule only lets the students take 4 classes per semester, making each class one hour and a half, adding 30 minutes to each class.
