Subject: Warning for Pet Owners

Yesterday afternoon (11/7) my husband and I were walking with our children around the pond behind the barn. As we passed the orange grove area, we saw a dead animal. It was in a dirt area just before the big dirt field behind the baseball field, and nearly adjacent to the playground on the other side of the sidewalk. Upon closer inspection, my husband declared it was HALF a dead cat.

Keeping the children away from it, I took a closer look myself. It looked like a relatively fresh kill. The head and two front legs were intact, but the back half was completely missing. It looked like it had been severed almost exactly down the middle of it, and the cut looked clean. A quick glance at the inner cavity proved that most of the organs were intact.

If a coyote or mountain lion had killed it, it seems like the organs would be missing or mangled and the kill would have been much messier. My worst fear is that a person (or more than one) did this. I called the barn and told Michelle right away, mainly because I didn't want any children traumatized over such a grizzly sight.

Pet owners beware!
