You could construct a sort of thick dark cloth gutter about a foot in width situated above the orchestra pit but below the front of the stage that would 'catch' the heavy fog and transport it off to either side. The lip nearest the audience would be slightly higher than the height of the stage so as to 'catch' more fog.
A simple plank of wood, painted black at the front of the stage might help, but another option is to have some heavy cloth that routes the heavy fog directly to the floor of the orchestra pit, rather than smothering them from head to foot. The cloth would have to be fixed slightly higher than the front of the stage, and have roughly a 2 foot distance from the front of the stage - the space through which to 'duct' the fog. It's very hard to explain, but I suppose you could liken it to a cloth backdrop for the orchestra which captures the fog and routes it to the floor of the pit.
