I'm sorry, this is not a response but a plead for help... couldn't figure out how to post a question either...
One of my two Rotts had TPLO surgery in late October on one of both hind legs that will require it. She's currently 2.2 yrs old. It was a high-risk operation (angle was 41 degrees). She was doing wonderfully until about 10+ days ago. I got a funny feeling something wasn't right, but could put a finger on it. During a routine therapy session 6 days ago she broke loose to chase a stray dog that wandered into the yard. I immediately knew she had hurt herself. I called her surgeon immediately the following morning, but he was not on rotation. I left a message explaining the situation and asked that he please be located and give me a call. After 48 hours and several more calls I decided to take her to her locale vet. It isn't good. The leg is a mess, the pin has come completely out and through the skin - and she has an infection that has entered her bones. She was given the following medications: cefazolin, rimadyl, baytril, cephalexin, otomax, and metacam. She was sent home with more cephalexin, baytril and metacam. The vet was trying to be gentle and leave the final progness to her surgeon, but indicated she could die, good probability of limb loss, if the limb can be saved, severe arthritis and limited use would be best case, with a reminder that she will have to be subject to the same risk with the other leg. We are both attempting to contact the hospital that did the surgery, but we had severe weather here that has completely shut it down (with limited phone use as well with downed lines). I am in shock, and need to know what this all means. She is my soul, but I will not sit back and watch her indure unneccessary pain. I do not necessarily trust the doctor's advice as the only and absolute solution. If someone has anything to add... the zinc... should I try it?
