When I first hooked up with my husband I had a terrible time with my (now) mother-in-law as she had really liked his ex-girlfriend. I felt I was tolerated when I went there and that she was waiting for us to split up.

Things changed when my own mother became terminally ill and died as my mother-in-law realised that we were serious, I wasn't going away and also, she empathised with my situation as she lost her mother when she was quite young too.

Now, we get on really well - talk about everything in that female sharing/bonding sort of way(much to the embarrassment of my husband) and he feels that we gang up on him!
