Subject: QABL Proposal

I had intended to reply direct to the forum post marked QABL, but decided that it would be fairer to start my own thread. Mulgrave has constantly mentioned an interest in entering the QABL, however, I don't believe it has ever been seriously looked at. Currently there are two programs on offer in Cairns, and there are genuine concerns about a third and its effect on local competition. Personally I do not see any problem with a third program, especially when you look at the amount of junior talent around and how it is already been used. Having been part of a program that supports 11 x membership clubs (although in a community of 1,000,000) and how they all work together with the local NBL and WNBL programs, I see nothing but benefits for our own local NBL program. More juniors been exposed to elite competition can only futher enhance the prospects of the NBL program surviving locally, rather then continually relying on outside talent. The expence involved would be an issue, especially considering the need for sponsorship and coorporate support. Three teams would spread this thin.
As far as facilities go, Cairns is blessed with several National standard facilities, one reason why government is reluctant to put too much expenditure into one. There is no doubt that we could support three teams within the facilities already offered. I do also believe that ultimately the QABL will become the predominate program for northern area's of Qld, while the Southern Cross is possibly been developed to cater for the south. Mulgrave is a relatively small association, and unlike Cairns and Townsville we are totally volunteer. If we are serious about QABL, we would need to start employing people to run programs to support this. This would mean further financial burdens. In respect to the competitiveness of the team, I believe Mulgrave would have a very talented group of players, and I know from personal experience that there are players around in other states who would be interested in being part of a program run by Mulgrave. If Mulgrave was to enter the ABL then it will need to indentify its primary objective and goal. Is it a program only interested in titles, or is it a program to further provide to the local membership the opportunities to advance and compete at an elite level. You can still be extremely competitive on this platform, however, your expectations change substantially. If you are only interested in where you finish at the end of the year, then you will need to pay for it financially, while if you are about exposure, development, competitiveness, and improvement, then your financial commitment initially is less. Just some fruit for thought. As far as my own personal opinion goes, YES I DO BELIEVE MULGRAVE COULD RUN A COMPETITIVE QABL PROGRAM, HOWEVER, WE WOULD NEED TO BEGIN THE PROCESS NOW, RATHER THEN LATER. SECONDLY, WHO WOULD BE WILLING TO STAND UP AND PUT THE TIME IN NECESSARY TO SEE IT THROUGH. ITS EASY TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS, ITS HARDER TO TAKE ACTION.
