Zürich, the sixth World Inline Cup 2003
A beautiful race… But no podium for Rollerblade

Zürich has come to appear as one of the most successful race in the world. The circuit in the middle of the big Swiss city aims to enchant the numerous spectators. The competition is always very fast and the skaters have to show great talents to succeed in. Despite their will to attack and make the race move, the Rollerblade’s skaters didn’t take the podiums next Sunday.

The races started at 15h30, under very hot temperatures. They were 664 in the men’s category and 139 in the women’s to take the start of the 35 kilometres race (four laps of eight kilometres plus the distance). An impressive and beautiful crowd on skates!

The men’s race: attacks and breakaways… But a massive sprint!
The Rollerblade team took the international men’s race in its hands from the very beginning of it. They were leading the enormous pack in the first lap. But Tristan Loy (VW SportXX) decided to lead the first attack after two kilometres. Jorge Botero (World team) and Roman Aeschbacher joined this early escapee and showed that the race would not go through without their presence. But Zürich was not an opened competition. Despite the attempts of breakaways, the peloton always got the upper hand. In the third lap, a group of four went away, with Wouter Hebbrecht (World team) and Sébastien Sergent (France team) in. It was pulled back in after two kilometres. Another group of four went just on the moment of the junction: Christoph Luginbühl (VW SportXX), the winner of Nice, was here, with Jorge Botero (World team) and Vincent Esnault (France team). They also just went for a while… During the entire last lap, the fifteen skaters of the pack seemed to wait for the sprint.
The “battle” for the sprint really began in the very last kilometres of the race. The “U” corner, 1,5 km before the finish, was hot, with three lines taking it front of. The teams of Roces and SAAB Salomon turned it in the leading place. Kalon made a strong effort to place his following team mates during the last straight line: he took the left side of the road but it was probably too late. The quartet of SAAB Salomon crossed the line ahead in the time of 49’43’’48, Briand taking the victory, and a big option upon the Swiss and the World Inline Cups 2003. Jorge finished eight and Shane eleven, whereas Arnaud Gicquel (Helvetia Patria Rollerblade) managed to take a good sixth position. In the World Inline Cup provisional rankings, Jorge is still third, behind Briand and Massimiliano Presti. Arnaud is five, Shane eight, Kalon ten and Wouter fourteen.
