Kids May Inherit Shyness, Study Suggests

By PAUL RECER, AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON - Shyness may be inherited, a study suggests.

A shy child can learn to be more outgoing with age, but a physical reaction in the brain linked to a person's temperament does not change, the study indicates.

The study, appearing this week in the journal Science, conducted brain scans on 22-year-olds and found that those who had been classified 20 years before as inhibited or shy children had a distinctive reaction in their brains when confronted with novel images.
.
.
.
"That is support for the notion that the reason they were shy, timid and reserved when they were 2 years old is because they had an excitable amygdala," said Kagan. This suggests that shyness is a temperament that can be inherited, but the researcher said this temperament does not necessarily determine one's eventual personality.

"They are now 22 years old," Kagan said of the test subjects. "A lot of the ones who were fearful aren't fearful anymore. They have overcome it. But the question is, did they still have a very active amygdala."

Based on the brain scans, Kagan said, the answer is clearly yes.
.
.
.
Kagan said that before any firm conclusions can be drawn there needs to be a similar research using many more subjects than the 22 in the current study.

Although some children are shy and others are outgoing, he said, these traits can change with time and life experiences. "People overcome their shyness," Kagan said. "You can also acquire shyness."

Extreme shyness can be a precursor for serious disorders, such as social phobias and depression. Kagan said that by finding the biological basis for such shyness, it may be possible to develop drugs to treat patients whose lives are adversely affected by the condition.

Go to Sleep Dear, It's Time to Have Sex
'Sexsomnia' occurs more often than we think, says an Ottawa doctor.

Sharon Kirkey - CanWest News Service

Sunday, June 22, 2003

A nightclub bouncer arrived in Dr. Paul Fedoroff's office after his wife complained he was constantly trying to have sex with her when she was asleep.

Only the nightclub bouncer couldn't remember ever doing what his wife claimed he did.

"If it happens again," Dr. Fedoroff told him, "ask your wife to turn on the light and tell me what she sees."

A week later, the bouncer was back. "She said I was asleep."

Thus began the Ottawa psychiatrist's research into a bizarre new disorder that he and other Canadian psychiatrists have dubbed "sexsomnia" -- people who engage in sexual behaviour while asleep. They believe the disorder should be recognized as a new "clinical entity" and warn it is far more prevalent than doctors suspect.
.
.
.
Sexsomnia can affect both men and women. While the causes are unknown, researchers suspect stress, chronic sleepiness, or alcohol or drug abuse may play a role. Seizure disorders, an injury to the brain, or a history of physical or sexual abuse may also be triggers. In some cases, nocturnal sex may be considered "odd but still within present social norms," the authors write, "particularly if the partner is a willing participant." In fact, some sexsomniacs are apparently better lovers unconscious than they are awake.

But some sexsomniacs can be "crude and aggressive," says Dr. Colin Shapiro, lead author of the report. His team describes several cases of men who were charged with sexually assaulting their partners, or even their own children. All were "exculpated" after doctors found evidence of sexsomnia, and the study suggests cases of alleged sexual molestation should be investigated for evidence of the sleep sex disorder -- a prospect that alarms groups who work with sex assault victims.
.
.
.
"This thing will create just another loophole for men to get through," says Debbie King, executive director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Sexual Assault Support Centre. "They'll say: 'Oh, but I did it in my sleep.' "

Doctors believe the phenomenon fits into a category of sleep disorders known as parasomnias. Parasomnic behaviour includes nightmares, night terrors and people who walk, talk or even eat in their sleep ("sleep eaters" have been known to eat slabs of butter, even cleaning products, while asleep). But what makes sexsomnia unique is that most other parasomnias involve solitary acts, says Dr. Shapiro, director of the Sleep and Alertness Clinic at Toronto Western Hospital.
.
.
.
The 11 cases of sexsomnia Dr. Shapiro's team report in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry are not nearly so shocking, but disturbing nonetheless: a 39-year-old married father of five who was charged with sexually touching his nine-year-old daughter when she climbed into her parents bed after a nightmare; a 32-year-old, out-of-work mechanic who was accused of sexually assaulting a young girl; a 37-year-old police officer who would "initiate sexual behaviour" about once a month in his sleep, and once grabbed his wife around the neck (he woke up after she slapped him hard).

While all of the men who were charged were cleared, Dr. Fedoroff, co-director of the sexual behaviours clinic at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, acknowledges it's impossible to know for certain whether they were truly asleep. But he has assessed men who have been charged with sexual assault who display no signs or symptoms of sexually deviant behaviour, but who in sleep studies show clear signs of a parasomnia, such as sleepwalking and talking, "which are all pretty tough to fake," Dr. Fedoroff says. Sexsomnia "simply raises the possibility of another explanation."

Who'da thunk it! 'But officer I was asleep, believe me, normally I'm gay!'

83 Percent Of Women Don't Consider Lap Dances As Cheating

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash)
-- Expect an increase in strip club attendance after this news gets out: 83 percent of American women don't think lap dances count as sexual contact. That's the naked truth from "Playboy" magazine, which has just released a new casual sex survey.

Many American men agree lap dancing isn't sex -- 90 percent to be exact.

Other shocking sex stats....

-- 53 percent of women have someone they see simply for sex, but only 40 percent of guys can make that claim.

-- 62 percent of women have had casual sex while in a steady relationship with someone else compared to 54 percent of guys.

-- Finally, 34 percent of American women say they've had casual sex more than ten times in the last year, but only 24 percent of guys have been that slutty.

Uh.... take this as you would... don't know if they only are talking about the 'straights' or not? You'd think with Playboy they would be. So all those women are having more sex with a fewer amount of guys? There really are human studs in the world! And the only lap dance I ever saw performed was definitely sex!

Finally.... Japanese media is just getting fucking weird when it comes to sex, well some of it. What I have noticed in their reporting is a definite bias towards sexualizing all women for their male audience, even lesbians. Lesbians seem to be the "in" thing in the media, but I have yet to see a Japanese article concerning gay males. Part of the double standard, whatever titillates the hetero-male. Re:

Gal on gal a Go Go
By Ryann Connell - Staff Writer

Japanese lesbians were forced into the closet for so long, they almost started smelling like mothballs -- a stark contrast to their Western sisters, where there were no moths at all as they came out in droves. Gone are the days when Sapphics were subjugated, as gal on gal is all the go with a dash of dyke evident everywhere throughout the archipelago.

"Lesbianism is currently the rage in music, movies and comics," Weekly Playboy (6/17) hears from a gushing Seitaro Nakamura, managing editor of Yuri Shimai (Yuri Sisters), a newly created manga for girls about girls who love girls. "It's almost as though this is the first year of the Age of the Lesbian."

Some are hardly surprised women have turned off the worm.

"Women sick of selfish men who think only about their only ejaculation is behind the increase in lesbians. When a woman and a woman blend their bodies together, they're liberated from the play-acting sex they have to go through with men," sex journalist Minami Koike tells Weekly Playboy. "Women take care of the mind and the body. Women are never going to be pleased by guys who lack the creativity to try and enjoy the various pleasures that a woman has to offer."

It seems the current liking for lesbianism has something for all women, including those who don't mind the rough treatment guys are accustomed to hand out.

"Adult videos are popular when it comes to a masculine kind of lesbian culture," the managing editor of Video Mate, a movie devoted to adult magazines, tells Weekly Playboy. "More and more porno starlets are agreeing to do lesbian movies. Homosexuality was once a taboo subject, but there has been a trend recently to treat it as a cheerful and enjoyable item. Porn actresses who once shunned the idea of having sex on screen with another woman are making themselves available because they've heard it's enjoyable."

Adult video director Kei Morikawa can also understand what it is that's suddenly allowed more Japanese women to know what Japanese men have known for eons -- Japanese women make great lovers.

"Porn actors don't have the luster they used to. Even I don't want to watch a guy doing it. And women are sick of pretending, too," the stick flick supremo tells Weekly Playboy. "What's happening now is a development that was not entirely unpredictable."

Erotic novelist Hiroki Kuroi says the thrill of the forbidden is making women think chicks are chic.

"Lesbianism's greatest charm lies in issues of morality," he says. "That's what makes it so thrilling when a young woman is seduced by another woman and finally gives in even though she knows she's tasting a forbidden fruit."

From Footsies to Frog Jobs, Female Felons Getting It Inside

By Ryann Connell - Staff Writer
June 23, 2003

Japan's jail birds, the women incarcerated in the country's six female prisons, are facing enormous problems getting sexual relief behind bars, according to Asahi Geino (6/26).
About one-third of Japan's roughly 2,800 jail birds are in their 30s, usually the time when women reach their sexual peak.

What's more, nearly half of Japan's female inmates are serving sentences for stimulant drug convictions, a dire situation when it comes to sex.

"Women in jail not only know what it's like to take speed, but they have probably had sex while under the influence of speed as well," former yakuza and now author Shinji Ishihara tells Asahi Geino. "Naturally, they're going to be really open when it comes to talking dirty, but they're also unlikely to forget the intense thrills they felt while having sex when high on speed."

A woman we'll call Akiko has done time in five of Japan's six women's prisons.

"Every night, you can see nearly all the girls fiddling away under their futon. Some of them get right into it. Some are even so loud that others complain that their moaning is too loud," Akiko tells Asahi Geino. "You can buy books with your own money in the prison, but there're probably more dirty ones available in the library. There're restrictions on popular ladies comics and erotic manga. We can only take out three books each. We aren't supposed to swap them with other inmates, but nobody bothers about that rule.

Ex-con but now anti-drug crusader and author Sayuri Yokota notes that just about any man would become a chick magnet if around Japan's jail birds.

"They hardly get a chance to see any men, even warders, so even the ugliest of men looks good to them. In the workshop I was in, there was a big, fat warder who all the girls would service because he sold them paint thinner to sniff. Some women had to revert to reverse sexual harassment, like asking a cleaner in his 50s if they could feel him up, just so they could relieve their stress," Yokota tells Asahi Geino.

Another former inmate of Wakayama Women's Prison, let's call her Momoko, tells of the imaginative methods jail birds improvise to wile away their wanton woes.

"This guy came to perform at one of the shows they put on for us about once every three months and I just stared at his crotch the whole time and imagined what it would be like to get my hands on it," she says. "For tools, I'd wrap about seven ball point pens together with an elastic band and cover them with plastic to use as a dildo. We're only allowed to have three pens in our possession, so I had to borrow some from the other inmates. Some of the girls used about 10 pens, saying that was closer to what their husband was like."

Other methods of relief can be even more beastly.

"Sometimes, while out in the exercise area, you might catch a frog. We'd take these back to our cells and have frog parties. We'd work out an order and take turns to insert the frog down there. The frog starts to panic and jumps around everywhere. It feels really good," Momoko says. "You've got to be careful, though, because sometimes you can squeeze to hard and that suffocates the frog. There used to be really big fights among the girls when that happened."

Other inmates make up for the absence of men by becoming more masculine.

"They'd get their chance every month when it came to hairdressing day. They'd ask for a crew cut, which let all the other inmates know they were lesbians," Momoko says.

Such moves didn't always work, though. Akiko elaborates.

"Every time you try to talk to one of the butch inmates, the warders get mad. You can send them a love letter, but if it's found, you'll be punished. You could be sent to solitary, and even ruin your chances of parole. Everybody may find the butch birds sexy, but they're more to look at than anything else," she says.

Sometimes, if the jail birds are really lucky, they can slip their legs under the futon of the inmate beside them and use their toes to bring her to climax without warders or fellow inmates in the communal cells ever realizing what was happening. But even that has its difficulties.

"We're only allowed to bathe twice a week," Momoko moans to Asahi Geino. "You've got to make sure you wash your feet and hands really quickly soon after you wake up or the smell of the other girl's odor will give you away."

Well... take it for what you will....
