It does sound like you may have have something wierd going on - the first thing you can do is keep a record of what happens and when and who witnesses to see if a pattern appears. Also think carefully if there has been anything that may of triggered this event - eg emotional upset in the family etc - you may find that if this is resolved the phenomena will disapear of its own accord. Has anything like this happened to your mum before? My advice is lways look for natural causes rather than supernatural but the activity increases it may be worth contacting a paranormal group such as The Ghost Club to come and investigate the problem especially if you feel increasingly uncomfortable with what is happen.
