Early on, I thought that way, but once I realized that I could do the same, it really opened up the game for me. It is more of a two way street that people realize at least at its most fun and entertaining levels.

I think these optional rules may be good guidelines for newer players and DM's as with many of the newer rules and options. However, as players/DM's gain experience, I think it's better to let the game flow more naturally and don't become so bogged down in the mechanics of the "rules".
