I don't think it was in character for a foot soldier without rank to go out and try to solve a problem diplomatically. They get paid to go and fight people. I doubt the character had any diplomacy, or enough charisma to pull off a diplomatic solution (was that character correctly role-played in any way?).

He still betrayed his race and his countrymen to non-Hyborians(I'm not entirely sure why there were ranks of Gundermen soldiers working with the Shemites to begin with - unless Shem is negotiating a treaty with Conan or something. That is a mystery to explore).
