It can be done . . . I simply increase the AC vs the Great Sword by 2 (assuming a large shield). Here's the matrix:
































Strength 10 14 18
Great Sword 1 1 1
Scimitar + Shield .71 .73 .73
Long Sword + Shield .83 .79 .77
Bastard Sword + Shield .90 .83 .80


To feat balance the Bastard Sword I gave all others a +1 Weapon Focus bonus to hit and then removed it from the Bastard Sword to account for its EWP requirement.
