I agree completely that this is a truer test of strength and was going to post something to the same effect eventually. Unfortuantely, a scenario like this doesn't offer an opportunity to compare . . . there's too many variables . . .

This isn't the first time this discrepance bothered me. I even posted a poll to get a sense of general feelings:

Who's Better?

It's very true that a Wizard needs a Fighter around -- a well balanced party works best. But, playing as a Wizard, I see the fighter, not so much as the offense, but as The-guy-who-might-get-targeted-instead-of-me.
