Then it just comes down to initiative. It will prove nothing. Put the characters in a real game, with allies, and a real need to survive, and the fighter can come through. It won't be a sure thing, but he has a chance. With a good use of skills, and perhaps a charging horse, the fighter could take out the wizard.

I played a game with another DM where my fighter took out a much higher level wizard. The wizard was in his camp, and did not see me sneaking up, nor did he hear me. I peppered him with arrows, and hid behind a rock during his turn (popping up like a Hatfield shooting at a nearby McCoy). When he was dying I walked up and coup de graced him.

I'd be willing to do that scenerio, but you may well win. I am saying it is 50/50. We'd have to play it out a few times to find out for sure.
