Dear Friends and Family,
"Come over to Macedonia and help us..." Acts 6:19 Recently, Greek believers asked Youth With A Mission to come and help them bring a witness to the world and to Greece at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. They requested that YWAM play a leading role in mobilizing international believers and locals to help strategize a national evangelism campaign.
In the Summer of 2004, Athens will welcome the world and once again become a crossroods of the nations as 500,000 people from 217 nations converge with the 4 million people living in the city.
The Olympic outreach is targeting 75 islands and 4 additional Olympic host cities including Athens. The idea will be that each team will do evangelism in Athens and other parts of Greece to people from all parts of the world and from different walks of life, hopefully even athletes and coaches! There are 4 outreach components for the YWAM Olympic Games outreach 2004. These components are:
World Wide Prayer-24 hours prayer force, hoping to have 10 million intercessors.
Mass One on One Evangelism.
Jesus Video Distribution-to every athelete, coach, visitor to the Athens Games, local Greek people. The video will be used in one on one evangelsim and as a welcome gift to each hotel room.
Ministry to the Church in Greece-mentoring young Greek Believers.
As YWAM Perth we have just sent 61 people over to Athens, these participants are a mixture of people, some are staff, some are students currently just finishing their DTS and we have some people from other parts of the world in the body of Christ that are joining us in Greece. As YWAM Perth, we are trusting God to see 1 750 people saved during our time in Greece. 8 teams are now in Greece and 2 of the teams are heading off to the Middle East after this time to be apart of Project 17, which is a year long initiative focusing on 17 nations in the Middle East. Right now YWAM Perth has upped the prayer cover for our teams and we have set up a three times a day prayer specifically for this outreach where we gather as a base to pray for them for half an hour, in addition to our regular 24 hour prayer chain.
The olympic opening ceremony: the torch lighting ceremony scheduled on March 25: at the original site of the games in ancient Olympia , southwestern Greece, and according to the modern-day ritual, young women clad as Zeus priestesses will summon the divine light of Apollo while the torch is lit from reflected rays of sunlight in a concave mirror.
Please, please, please! Pray with us against the spirits of Zeus and Apollo as the whole world will partake of this religious ritual which not many are aware of - the worship of the gods and of idols, as that is the history of the torch lighting. The torch relay started out as a religious ritual, but later on became a race or contest of minor importance for young men, teenagers, and boys, held by night. Later, it became one of the most popular team events. There were torch relays in various different regions of Greece – Delphi, Samos, Thrace, Epidavros, Attica. They mostly dedicated to Hephaestus, Artemis, Athena and Prometheus.
PRAY FOR
Protection and covering over everyone when travelling into Greece and the Middle East
That we would have incredible opportunities to share the gospel with people everywhere we go
Salvation- that many people would give their lives to the Lord and then go on to be discipled in the church in Greece
That God would be glorified during the Olympic Games and not other false gods.
May this time be a revival of what happened on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers in power and they witnessed to the truth and the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:8) and many people came to the Lord.
