Subject: Barely There

Barely there,
(hardly anywhere);
he stumbles to the bed,
beside his latest pastime,
who's sleeping off the wackygrass.
A vodka bottle spills
tasteless liquor on the hardwood
floor by his mattress,
he laughs, dishearteningly,
chuckles, lights a cigarette.
A tear falls onto his pillow from his sleepy eye. A
stack of poems pushed up against a dresser cast an eerie,
forbidden shadow on the wall.
The sounds of sirens hiss in the distant.
The pastime rolls over, smiles, and sleeps again.
He rolls off the bed, takes a Montblanc from
a velvet-lined case,
writes furiously of firefly fairies,
swimming in a glass of bourbon,
blood that tastes of gold, love that tastes
of alcohol;
these thoughts bouncing off his skull
like tipsy ballerinas on crack.
He breaths heavily when done, sips
the vodka, sucks on the cigarette, looks out onto another page of midnight,
and says, "Oh, God, when does the end come?"
