Omigod. These aren't anime at all, but they are truly brilliant films. Tell him to look into Jacob's Ladder, and Memento.

In terms of anime...hmm...there's Escaflowne, but it's a bit long and it's a minor point. There's Lain, and then there's The Big O which more or less is entirely about memory loss.

In the fansub realm, there's Haibane Renmei - yes, I know, volume 1 is out; the rest of the show isn't, however.
