--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was early evening and Theresa still lay in her hospital bed not responding to anything or anyone. Martin had gone down to the cafeteria to get him and Pilar a bite to eat, and Miguel had gone home.
Pilar sat by her daughter’s side brushing her hair. Her heart was breaking for her daughter.
Theresa has never been the type to just lie around. She was a mover, and a doer. Just to see her still and not responsive was too much for Pilar to bear.
“Why don’t you wake up Mija. Please come back to us.”
Right then her doctor walked in.
Pilar looked up at him for answers.
“Doctor please tell me how my daughter’s condition is.
Theresa’s doctor looked as though he dreads spreading the news of Theresa’s condition.
“Doctor please.” Pilar pleaded. “Tell me if my daughter will be okay.”
Just then Martin walked in with a couple of sandwiches and two sodas.
“Oh good Mr. Fitzgerald. I was just about to talk to your wife about Theresa’s condition.”
Martin sat the contents in his hand on the table and took his place next to is wife.
The doctor pulled out Theresa’s x-rays and test results.
“Well, we couldn’t understand why she hadn’t come out of her coma, but it seems as though she had a serious blow to the head.”
“Oh my God!” Pilar said gasping for air. “He struck her. I can’t believe that son of a…”
“Wait! Calm down Mrs. Lopez Fitzgerald. It’s not a blow from someone hitting Theresa. She has swelling right around this area here.” He said showing them the x-ray. “It looks as though she fell backwards off a chair or a bed or something.”
“Does it seem as though she was pushed?” Martin continued.
“Nothing indicates a struggle between her and someone else. It looks like she passed out first and then fell.”
Martin looked at Pilar and back to the doctor. “Oh I see.”
“We managed to stop the swelling, but because of the poison and the blow, it might make for a hard recovery.”
Pilar turned to look at her precious baby, and grabbed her hand.
“Oh Theresa. Please come back to us. Please don’t leave us. We all love you so much. Come back to me baby.”
Pilar began to cry again.
Martin tightened the grip on her and comforted her. The doctored walked out to give the family some time alone.
“Oh Martin, what are we going to do? What if she never wakes up? What if we never see our daughter again?”
“Shhh, don’t say that. Theresa will be fine. Have faith. She will come back to us.”

“So Ethan, is there anything you need to tell me about what has been going on with you and Theresa.” Sam asked once again.
“Well, I found out some news that Theresa was keeping from me that got me upset.”
“And what was that.”
“Well that is none of your business. And maybe I should get a lawyer before we go on.”
“Okay, you don’t have to answer that. Just tell me if Theresa felt threatened about staying with you.”
“Why you son of a…! You have no right in asking if my own wife who loves me and whom I love is afraid to stay with me. Of course she does not feel threatened. I would never hurt her. She’s my life, my joy. My whole world revolves around the love we share for one another!”
Ethan sat back in his chair and took a breath. Sam had punched his buttons, and he found himself having to regroup.
Right then a forensics officer came in holding a bag with the two champagne glasses in it.
He walked over to Sam and whispered in his ear.
Sam took the bag and looked at Ethan.
“Ethan do you recognize these glasses?”
“Yes, some one sent them to Theresa and I as some sort of wedding present I suppose. They came in the mail this morning.”
“Do you know who they were from?”
“No, there was no return of address written on the box. And Theresa didn’t have a clue either.”
“Hmm, I see.”
“Why do you ask?” Ethan said spying the man he refused to call father.
“Ethan maybe you should get a lawyer before we go on.”
“No damn-it!”
“Ethan!” Ivy screamed out.
Ethan glanced at his mother and back to Sam.
“I demand to know why you asked about those glasses. If they are the reason Theresa is lying in a hospital bed, I have a right to know!” He continued to shout.
“Well, it looks like poison was made in the rim of the glass.”
“Oh my God!” Luis said before taking a seat near him.
Ivy clutched her hands to her mouth.
“Glass?” Ethan said stunned. “There are two glasses.”
“I know Ethan.” Sam continued. “There was poison found only on one glass. Theresa’s.”
Ethan stared at Sam in disbelief.
“Some son of a bitch is trying to kill my sister?” Luis hollered out, jumping out of his chair knocking it over.
“Ethan, I do advise you to get a lawyer.”
“I don’t need a damn lawyer. I don’t have anything to do with these glasses. They were a gift from someone we don’t know. Why poison would be on it is beyond me.”
Ivy put her arm around Ethan.
“Sam don’t do this to our son. You know he’s not a murderer. There’s no way he could have had anything to do with this.”
Sam gave a sympathetic look at Ivy, and then to Ethan.
“I know Ivy. I know he’s not capable of such acts. But soon this matter will be out of my hands. The District Attorney will be handling this case.”
“I don’t believe this. Some one is trying to kill my sister. And I’m not just going to stand by and let those bastards get away with it.”
“Luis calm down. There is no way I’m letting you on this case. It’s too personal.”
“But Sam, that’s my sister lying there in a coma. I just can’t sit back and let them get away with this.”
“Damn straight!” Ethan yelled. Someone is trying to kill my wife and I think I have a pretty good idea who’s behind it.”
“Ethan, there is nothing you can do about this. You need to leave it in the hands of the authorities.”
“The hell I will! There is no way I’m going to sit back and let someone kill my wife and have me take the fall for it. Now if we are done here, there is someone I need to see.”
And on that note Ethan left out of the police station to rectify a wrong that had been committed.
