*******************************
It had been a long night at the Crane Mansion. No one knew exactly what to say regarding Theresa’s return. Was it real? Was it even her?
Pilar’s mind raced with worry, confusion, and happiness. Her daughter was back from the grave. A grave that the Crane men had dug for her.
Her love for the ex Crane heir had blinded her of the dangers that would conflict, and haunt her family.
Her unaware affair with Julian had given her much more than she could handle. But the prophecy of her becoming Mrs. Crane had come to pass, and she had to work through its revelations.
And now she holds in her arms the grandson of Alistair, the ruthless and vindictive Crane of them all.
How was she going to handle such great responsibilities? Should she accept the fact that she could be the most powerful woman in Harmony, or the world for that matter, or would she continue to win the heart of a man she would always love?
Theresa became weak with exhaustion. She had been through a great deal, and needed to rest.
Pilar kissed her daughter and told her to come with her, and she’ll put her and her son to bed.
Ethan, who was standing not far from them held Gwen in his arms, but his eyes on Theresa. When he heard Pilar employing her to rest, he walked quickly to them.
“Pilar, if you don’t mind, I’ll take Theresa and the baby upstairs and make sure they are safe.”
“No Ethan. That would not be necessary. I’ll take my daughter and grandson upstairs. You stay here with Gwen and your mother. Theresa is my responsibility, and I’ll take care of her myself.”
Theresa softly touched her mother’s shoulder. “Mama, it’s all right. I’m okay. I can go by myself. But I would like a word with Ethan, so if you don’t mind, I would like for him to walk me up.”
Gwen rushed over when she heard Theresa trying to talk with Ethan.
“Umm, Theresa!” Gwen said looking rather angry. “Whatever you have to say to Ethan, I want to hear also. We are together now, and there is no way I’ll let you come between us again.”
Ethan gave Gwen a nasty look. “Gwen, she’s too weak to do anything.” Ethan said frowning. “Apologize to her.” He demanded.
“I will not…” Before Gwen could get the rest of her words out, Theresa interrupted her.
“That’s fine with me Gwen. You can come too. In fact it will give me the chance to say what I want to say to you as well.”
Gwen looked confused, but agreed. She wasn’t going to let Ethan have any time alone with Theresa ever again. She had learned from experience that it wasn’t a great idea.
Ethan loved Theresa completely at one point, and she was afraid he would love her again as much as he did before.
Gwen took little Ethan Martin in her arms, and headed up the stairs toward Theresa’s room.
Ethan grabbed a hold to Theresa’s arm and followed close behind.
Once inside the room, Theresa made sure her son was resting comfortable in his bassinette. She then walked over to Gwen and Ethan who were waiting to hear what she had to say.
She looked at Ethan with love and gratitude in her eyes.
“I want to thank you again for doing all you could to keep me from going into the death chamber. I know you feel like you should’ve done more, but there wasn’t anything you could do. Alistair had given the orders, and everyone had to follow them.”
Ethan touched her shoulder much to Gwen’s dismay.
“I’m so sorry that I couldn’t do more. I agonized after your death. It made me want to give up being a lawyer.”
“No, no Ethan. You mustn’t ever do anything like that. There was nothing you or anyone could do.”
“That’s right Ethan.” Gwen said pulling him closer to her. “You did what you could, and you mustn’t blame yourself. Besides, Theresa is alive and well, so it’s time to move past this.”
“Thank you. Thank you both for your faith in me. I just felt like such a failure watching you take your last breath.”
Ethan washed over his face with his hand as he remembered watching Theresa in the death chamber.
Theresa reached up to his hand and took it in hers. Ethan’s heart skipped as he felt her soft warm hands embrace his.
“No, Ethan, thank you. You were a real friend, and I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”
Gwen pulled Ethan towards her again and said, “That’s great Theresa, now if you don’t mind, Ethan needs his rest, so we’ll retire into his room now.”
Theresa smiled at Gwen. Ethan looked sadly at Theresa not knowing what to feel.
“Wait Gwen, I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry. I knew you loved Ethan, but that didn’t stop me from wanting him, and getting him.”
Gwen looked appalled. “He loved me too you know!” She snapped.
“Yes, yes, I know, and that is why I’m apologizing. I knew Ethan loved and cared for you, and I pulled out all the stops to win his love for myself. And now that he is with you again makes me realize that it was you all along that he should’ve been with. I believe whole-heartedly in fate, and just as fate would have it, I became Mrs. Crane just like I wanted all those years.”
Ethan interrupted. “No Theresa. I know it was me who you wanted to marry. You wanted your last name to be Mrs. Crane because of me, not that bastard Julian.”
Theresa looked at Ethan with a sad look. “I know Ethan, but fate wasn’t in our corner. It’s obvious now who you should’ve picked at mid-night mass. You and Gwen belong together. There’s nothing I can do about that now. I want to wish you both all the happiness in the world.”
“Well, thank you Theresa.” Gwen said holding on to Ethan’s arm even tighter now. “We’re glad you’ve come to accept our love and our relationship.” She continued not really believing Theresa at all.
Ethan’s heart was confused. He had just recommitted to Gwen, and yet, something was pulling him toward Theresa. He wanted to hold her in his arms and never let go. He wanted his lips to touch hers. He wanted to run his fingers through her long soft hair. He wanted her. He wanted her to feel things that she would never feel with another man.
But he couldn’t do those things now. He was with Gwen again, and Theresa had given them her blessings.
“She must be over me.” He said to himself.
“Ethan darling, do you hear me?” Gwen had been asking him to leave, but he was in deep thought about the beautiful woman that stood before them.
“Oh, yes Gwen, I’m ready.” Ethan looked back at Theresa with sadness in his eyes. “Good night Theresa. If you need anything, we’re right next door.”
Gwen’s face was furious now. She wanted to get the hell out of that room, and go on with her life, with her and Ethan. She wasn’t sure if that was what Ethan wanted anymore however. But she wasn’t going to worry about that. She had him now, and vowed never to let him go again.
“Thank you Ethan. But my mom is here, and I’m sure she’ll attend to my needs.” She said smiling.
Ethan looked sad as he listened to Theresa maturity. She wasn’t the same girl that clung over him just a year ago. She didn’t want or need him anymore. She was willing to move on with her life. A life that didn’t include him.
“Very well then.” Ethan said grabbing Gwen’s hand. “Sweet dreams.”
As they left, Theresa checked on Ethan Martin one more time, who was sleeping soundly.
She then walked over to her bed, undressed herself, and put on the nightgown Phyllis had left for her to sleep in.
She crawled under the covers, looked toward heaven and whispered thank you before falling fast asleep.
