Ethan tossed and turned over and over thinking about the words of his ex lover.
“I knew Ethan loved and cared for you, and I pulled out all the stops to win his love for
myself. And now that he is with you again makes me realize that it was you all along
that he should’ve been with. I believe whole-heartedly in fate, and just as fate would
have it, I became Mrs. Crane just like I wanted all those years.”
Was this true, Ethan thought? Was she not willing to fight for their love?
Theresa was always determined to have Ethan for herself. She didn’t care who got in
her way. Ethan knew this, but loved her all the more for it. But after her lies and
deception, there was no way he could trust her ever again.
“Did I make the right choice?” Ethan said to himself.
Gwen stirred in her sleep. “Did you say something honey?”
Ethan’s hand brushed up against her hair, as he quietly spoke to her.
“No Gwen. Everything is all right. Go back to sleep.”
Gwen slightly opened her eyes and looked at him. “Are you sure darling? Do you need
something?”
“I’m fine Gwen. Maybe I’ll run downstairs and get a drink of water. I’ll be right back.”
“Do you need me to come with you?” She said lifting her petite body from the bed.
“No, no. I’m fine Gwen. I won’t be but a minute. Go back to sleep.”
Gwen laid back down and agreed. She was too exhausted to move about in the middle
of the night anyway.
“All right honey, don’t be long.”
Ethan stood quietly trying not to disturb his lover, and put on his slippers and walked
out of the room into the cool dark hallways of the mansion.
Before heading to the stairs, he heard little Ethan Martin cooing in his bed. He
wondered if Theresa was tending to him. He peeked inside and saw her fast asleep.
He walked over to little Ethan and picked him up.
“Hey fellow.” Ethan said smiling at his namesake. “You can’t sleep? Neither can I.
You’re glad your mother is back aren’t you?”
Little Ethan kept his cooing, and Ethan continued to talk to him.
“You should get some sleep little buddy. Your mom has been through a great deal and
needs her rest. Come on, let’s lay back down.”
Ethan placed the baby back down in his bed and gently stroked his head until he fell
fast asleep.
After making sure little Ethan was quiet, he looked over to where Theresa lay.
“I should go.” He said to himself. “But I want to make sure she is fine before I leave.”
Ethan was unsure what force was pulling him closer and closer to her, but he couldn’t
control it. He wanted to be close to her right now, and make sure she didn’t leave him
again.
Ethan sat in the chair next to Theresa’s bed and breathed in her perfume. She was so
beautiful. Her hair lay a strewed over her pillow, and her cover was pulled off revealing a
silky cream negligee.
Ethan remembered how soft her skin was, and how full her lips were in their kisses.
He knelt down on the floor next to her bed and pulled strains of hair from her face.
“Theresa, why do you draw me close to you? What is this power you have over me?”
His hand went from her hair to her shoulder. The left strap of her nightgown fell from her
to reveal more of what lied underneath it. Ethan trailed his hand down her arm to her
fingertips.
“I felt so helpless, and so lost when I thought you were dead. And I’m grateful that God
has brought you back to…”
Ethan couldn’t say the words. She wasn’t his to claim anymore. She didn’t belong to
him. She was another man’s wife. A man that was his ex-father no less.
“How did things get so messed up between us?” He continued.
Suddenly, Theresa woke to his touch and his voice.
“Ethan?” She said looking puzzled into his eyes. “What are you doing in here?”
“I’m sorry I woke you. I heard the baby and…”
Theresa didn’t let Ethan continue.
“Ethan Martin! Is he okay?” She said rising slightly out of the bed.
“Yes, yes, he’s fine. He’s asleep now. No need to worry.”
Theresa looked down at her nightgown and placed the fallen strap over her shoulder,
pulling the covers up over her to her neck.
Ethan blushed as she hid herself from him. He knew every inch of her body. He could
remember the first time they made love on the beach. Something was drawing him to
have her in his arms again.
“Ethan, is there something you want?” She said holding the covers more tightly now.
Ethan spoke not a word. His eyes fixed on her beautiful face remembering the first
time they made love.
“Ethan?” She continued.
“Oh, umm, yes. Oh no, there’s nothing I want.” He said forcing the words out of his
mouth. “I was heading down the stairs to get a drink of water. Would you like
something?”
“No, I’m fine.” Came her reply. “I’m just tired.”
“I know.” Ethan remarked. “You’ve been through a great ordeal tonight. You should
rest, and I should go.”
Ethan stood up and walked toward the door.
“Thank you for checking on Ethan Martin. That was very kind of you.”
“Oh it was nothing. I love that little guy. He’s very beautiful, just like his mother.” He
said staring at her.
Theresa smiled and rose out of her bed. She pulled on her robe and walked over to the
bassinette.
“My precious baby.” She whispered looking at her son.
Ethan walked over to her and placed a hand on the baby’s little bed.
“Yes, he’s a special little fellow. I was so afraid he wouldn’t know who his mother was.
Or how beautiful she was. My heart was aching for him.”
Theresa placed her hand on Ethan’s arm, stroking it in a circling motion. He could feel
his body tingle with delight at her touch. He tried to move the thoughts of kissing her
out of his mind, but it was so hard to do, being alone with her in her dark bedroom.
He wanted to pick her up and place her down on the bed. He wanted their bodies to be
joined together as one.
“Ethan, I’m here now. My son will have a chance to know his mother. I will do
everything I can to be a good one. I’m just afraid of him being a Crane. I wouldn’t know
what to do if Alistair, or Julian tried to take my son away from me.”
Ethan grabbed a hold of Theresa’s hand, and brought it to his chest.
“I would never let anything like that happen Theresa. I’ll be there for you and little
Ethan.”
Theresa looked up at Ethan with sadness in her eyes.
“Ethan, I can’t allow you to do that. Your life is with Gwen now. I must face my battles
alone. I use to regret the fact that I went looking for Julian in Bermuda. I should’ve
stayed and worked things out with you. But I have no place for regrets now. My son
will fill my life with the happiness I’m seeking. I’m not sure at this point where I will go
from here, but as long as I have Ethan Martin, and my family, I’m sure I will be all
right.”
Ethan pulled Theresa close to him, still holding on to her hand. He brushed the hair
from her face with a soft stroke.
Her skin was still as soft as he remembered. He placed his hand behind her neck and
allowed her long dark hair to be its hiding place. He began to pull her closer to him. He
guided her head back as he leaned in to kiss her lips. He closed his eyes and held
his breath tight waiting for her lips to meet his.
But they never met. Theresa placed a hand over his lips just as they reached hers.
“Ethan no. Don’t do this. We mustn’t give in to desire.”
Ethan looked longingly in her eyes.
“Theresa, I need you. I want you. I don’t think I can survive without your touch.” He said
swallowing hard.
Theresa started to pull away, but Ethan grabbed both arms with a strong grip.
“No Theresa! Don’t pull away from me. Tell me you want me too. I need to hear you say those words. I don’t think I can let you go. I need you. Please baby.” He begged.
Theresa hated to see him like this. She wanted to give in to passion but had to be strong for both their sakes.
“Ethan, we’ve been down this rode before. I don’t think I could handle it this time. I hurt you so bad with my lies. I didn’t trust enough in our love, and it left me with a broken heart as well.
“You let me go with much right. Gwen is the better woman. She stood by you at all times. I know that you two have become intimate again. I can see it in her eyes. She loves you so much. I don’t want to be the cause of her heartache this time. It’s over Ethan. Just let me go.”
Theresa began to let the tears fall from her eyes as she spoke those painful words. But she knew it had to be said. It was the truth, and she had finally learned how to speak it. She was so tired of hiding things from Ethan. She didn’t want to lie to him anymore. She couldn’t lie to him anymore. It had hurt her just as much as it hurt him. She had to move on without him.
Ethan held on to her arms. He didn’t want to let her go, and he didn’t know how he could.
“Just one kiss my love, and I’ll let you go. Just one for closure.”
“No Ethan. You must let me go. There could be no kiss, no strings, no anything.”
“Well, if you don’t kiss me, I’ll think it’s because you’re afraid.”
“I’m not afraid of you!” She said, her voice raised.
“I don’t mean that you are afraid of me. I mean you are afraid because you know if you kiss me, you won’t be able to resist me.”
Theresa giggled, remembering the night of her motorcycle accident, when she manipulated Ethan into dancing with her to prove his loved for her.
“I can’t believe you.” She said hitting his chest softly.
Ethan smiled remembering that same night.
Theresa looked up with confusion in her eyes. She knew she had to move on, and wanted to for the sake of her infant son. She couldn’t continue to depend on Ethan any longer. She wanted to be her own woman. She wanted society to accept her as Mrs. Crane, even if that was given up Ethan.
Ethan softened his grip on her arms, and placed his arms around her small frame. He moved his arms up and down to relax her for this special kiss. Was it a kiss to say goodbye, or was it a kiss to start anew? He hoped it wasn’t a goodbye kiss. He hoped with all his heart.
He leaned closer to her as she lifted her head towards his. First a soft kiss grazed his lips and it started his heart to race. He became thirsty with her touch. He pulled her even closer to him as he deepened the kiss.
His hands roamed up and down her back as he began to pull her bathrobe from her body. He placed his hands inside and let it fall quickly to the floor revealing her creamy nightgown.
He wasn’t ready for the kiss to end. He wanted more. Their tongues danced together to a love song, a song made only for them.
Ethan then started to pull the straps of her gown down the sides of her arms to reveal her soft breast. He softly threw her head back and began to kiss her neck. Theresa let a moan escape her lips as he began to move closer to her chest.
Their breaths began to move rapidly, and it was hard to keep up. Her body was sucking him in, and he was letting it.
“Oh Ethan.” She softly cried.
“Oh Theresa, I want you. I need you.” He begged.
Theresa then did something unexpected. She put her hands up on Ethan’s shoulders, and began to push him gently away.
He was strong, and his grip was tight. He didn’t want to let her go. But she continued to push him with all her might.
“No Ethan. We can’t. Please, let me go.” She implored.
“Theresa please, I need you.” He continued.
“No you don’t. You need Gwen. She’s waiting for you. Please, just let me go. We can’t do this. It isn’t right. We have to move on.” She said trying to catch her breath.
Ethan loosened his grip once again, and placed his head atop hers as he caught his breath. He knew she was right, but he didn’t want her to be. He wanted her to give in to the passion that belonged only to them.
Theresa lifted her head, and looked into his eyes. She searched them for a few seconds, until she found the words to say.
“Goodbye Ethan. It’s nearly morning, and my body is still so tired. I must get some rest so I can attend to Ethan Martin when he awakes.”
Ethan looked sadly into her eyes, and took two steps backwards. He licked his lips, and brushed his hand across them still feeling the moisture of her kiss. How could he walk out of that room knowing they would never be together again?
His heart broke into a million pieces. How could he move past this when he felt Theresa wanted him just as much as he wanted her?
“Goodnight!” Came the strained remark from his lips. And he slowly turned and walked quietly out of the room.
