Well I tried plugging the hard disk into my other computer running windows 2000 on FAT and it showed up straight away. I immediately made a copy of all my files and ran 2 different full virus scans that showed nothing. Windows scandisk reported no errors both before and after running defrag on that disk and I was able to save all my documents, install files, emails etc..
When I tried to format the drive it got to about 90% and sat there for a few hours making a few noises now and then so I figure it found a whole chunk of bad sectors. Since there was a power failure this morning I don't know if it managed to finish or not. I will try fdisk tonight as maybe this motherboard can access more capacity on the drive.. ?
