I don't imagine many go into the JA with anything but the best of intentions and on the whole I think that they are good people.

But their achilles heel is that their first loyalty is not really to God, but to their church...and they guard her jealously. What they have built is something remarkable and they are terribly proud of her.

And since the earliest days they have been aggressively defensive of their church....to the point where they will lie in order to suppress the truth about what goes on there.

When I was there the bible was used to defend this behaviour. Noel called the truth about the church (the Jesus Army/ Jesus fellowship) a treasure, or as the bible has it, "pearls".

"Cast not your pearls before swine, lest they turn and rend you"

We on the outside (christians or non christians alive, detractors or potential friends) are the swine. So, Noel had a biblical justification for witholding the truth. No amount of wriggling and avoidance, no amount of misinformation or even lying about former members who revealed truths about the JA was unacceptable if it protected the truth from people who might use it against the JA/ church.

The JA are good people who feel that God gives them the right to use underhanded and dishonest methods in order to protect the kingdom of God (JA). Like soldiers in the war,the Jesus ARMY will use whatever camouflage, decoys, propaganda or deceits are necessary to confound the enemy.
