"Sammy, are u going to help me get Dun ready?" I called up the stairs.Samantha came running down the steps. She had her blonde hair in 2 braids, & was wearing a t-shirt that had a picture of a bay horse jumping over a huge fence with its rider & a pair of beige breeches. She rushed passed me & said "I'm going!" Samantha stopped to put on her zip-up paddock boots, then ran down the driveway to the barn.I was dressed casually in a pair of flare jeans, a American Horse Show Association t-shirt & sneakers.I called to her "wait for me!" I ran after her down to the barn.I followed Sammy into the tack room & helped her bring her tack out to Dun's stall.Dun It Again, a 10 y/o blue dun Icelandic pony gelding, was munching on a flake of hay in his stall.I brought him out into the crossties.I helped Samantha brush him, then let her do the saddle, but I tightened the girth.I put on Dun's bridle, but let Sammy tighten the nose-band & throat-latch of the bridle. Then Sammy strapped on her riding helmet & she led her pony to the indoor arena.I followed.I held Dun's reins as Samanthan mounted. Then I walked to the middle of the arena."Sammy, why don't you walk Dun." Sammy squeezed Dun into a walk. The 13.3 hand pony had smooth strides.I called to Samantha "keep your heels down." Sammy nodded & pushed her heels down, & tightened her grip on the reins.I let Sammy walk Dun a few laps in both directions before calling to Sammy "trot Dun, posting." Samantha called back to me "ok," & squeezed Dun into a trot. Her posting was great & she was keeping her hands still, & her heels down & somewhat still. She was also sitting up in the saddle with her shoulders straight."Your position looks great Samantha," I said to her.Sammy smiled & said "thanx, mommy."I had her walk & trot Dun in both directions before setting up 4 groundpoles with jump standards by them in lines on the long sides of the arena.Samantha brought Dun to a halt, & I said "now your going to trot Dun over the groundpoles, starting on the right.Keep Dun straight as you trot over the groundpoles, & stay in 2-point until you go over the second groundpole, then trot on & do the 3rd groundpole, then the 4th, go around the course one more time & end in a big circle.Whenever your not in 2-point, be posting to the trot."Samanthan nodded & got Dun to trot. She headed the pony straight to the first groundpole. She went into 2-point right before Dun trotted over the grounpole, then held her 2-point & trotted Dun over the second groundpole. She kept on posting until Dun went over the next groundpole, holding her 2-point.She went over the 4th groundpole & went around one more time, ending on a courtesy circle.I had her do the course one more time, then had her do the course from the other direction. Then I said to Sammy "walk Dun around while I put these groundpoles back. Then were going to canter." Samantha said excitedly "yay! I really want to canter!" I put away the standards & groundpoles. Then I grabbed a lunge line & had Samantha halt Dun so I could hook the lunge line to his bridle.I led Dun over to the middle of the ring, then got him going in a big circle."Ok Sammy, got him to canter." Samanthan nodded determinedly & squeezed Dun into a canter."sit back Samantha, if you lean forward, he will just go faster." Samantha heard me & sat back some. Her feet were flopping all over, so I called "still your feet." Samantha kept her feet quiet & her heels down as much as she could.I had her canter for a little longer, then switched directions with Dun & had Sammy canter that way. Then Samantha walked out Dun & dismounted. She led her pony back to the stable & untacked him. Then I helped her put her tack away, & then turned out Dun for her.I let Sammy give him a carrot before I turned him out though. Then Sammy & I walked back up to the house...
