You brought up two things about Jayne that point to the same conclusion. First the business with Jayne peering through the window on the operation. I missed one ep. but when did Jayne ever before show affection for Kaylee? If he cares for her, and it sure looked like it in that scene, no wonder his nasty jokes have drifted from her onto Simon who seems to hold her affections. Mal never has an unkind word for Inara, except when he's talking about her job, in other words all those other men in her life. The other thing is that over and over with Jayne it's about loyalty. Just how much will it take to push him over to the other side, and who even then would he be willing to betray. With Mal, it's always about loyalty as well. The difference with him is deciding who is on his side and who is not. No money or anything matieral will change the way he thinks and acts toward anyone. But, let him once see the good and decent side of someone else, and he wants to do what he can for them. I couldn't figure out from the first nine episodes I saw, why Mal would dream of keeping someone as dangerous and treacherous as Jayne around. 'Serenity' shows the reason. Mal and Jayne are very nearly the same person. A little more disillusionment and Mal is Jayne.
