Wow, that's an excellent point - that maybe Joss wanted foremost to make a Western, but didn't want to rewrite history in order to have strong female characters like Zoe. His natural alternative would be to make a sci-fi Western so that he could construct a universe with his own rules. I wish I had read that kind of explanation of Firefly's premise to begin with; maybe I would have jumped on board as a fan sooner.
