I'm harking back (but without phlegm) to the beginnings of Angel, a legitimately episodic noir adventure with a vampire detective, which fizzled in execution and quickly morphed into something much more interesting. Joss had a while to ruminate on how Buffy could tweak conventions - she was much more valley-girlish in the movie. I'm starting to think that I've been giving him too much credit in the concept realm - he seems to get rolling with clunky concepts that sound better than they play but he's really good at adjusting them on the fly.
