Great mention of the visuals, I'm just not visual enough a person to get them by myself. I think that we've been given hints that there is something, all be it unformed, beneath the crude bluster. So touched and flustered and frustrated in "Jaynestown." Such a gentle and friendly drunk. "Don't tell 'em what I done." "Coulda, woulda, shoulda."

To me his sharp physical appetites, for food, drink, and sex, seem to hint at a hunger inside for. . . . something. Something Mal and Serenity supply, but that he can't identify, and therefore realize or fully participate in. Seems like the majority of the crew are hungering for something they lost. Jayne yearns for something he's never had. A world where there aren't "just people like" him. That he can't quite imagine fully enough to embrace.
